The annual Caribbean street parade Notting Hill Carnival has taken place in London since 1966 to celebrate the influx of immigrants brought to the UK during Windrush. Carnival is a celebration of the rich and multifaceted artistic heritage that came with them, especially in the form of Afro-Caribbean music, dance and sound system culture.

The South London-born poet, producer and NTS Radio host James Massiah is one of a generation of musicians who has been influenced by the city's Afro-Caribbean cultural legacy. In this interview, he talks to Errol Anderson of the South London-based curatorial platform Touching Bass about his connection to London's sound systems and his own artistic evolution. His output centres around hedonism and what he calls "joyful living"—a reaction to the church community he grew up in. Many of the lyrics on his most recent EPs, like True Romance, paint a picture of drugs, partying, sex, addiction and heartbreak (he's even gone on to name his recurring poetry night Adult Entertainment). Music, he reflects, has provided a powerful and cathartic means to express himself and open up.

In his youth, Massiah wasn't just shaped by his church, he says, but by the Afro-Caribbean genres circulating through his neighborhood: '80s funk, raga, garage, grime and a form of Jamaican dancehall called Yardie. Later, as he was exposed to popular rock and house music, he took the sensibilities he heard in pop acts like Fleetwood Mac and applied them to a Caribbean musical framework. His sound palette is an uncanny amalgamation of Stevie Nicks' ethereal voice with the stylings of soca—a sub-genre that fuses calypso, reggae and Caribbean zouk. Listen to the episode in full.

Something a little different than my usual style. I've been delving into the world of Afro-Caribbean rap and R&B, inspired by sounds and rhythms from the African continent, Jamaica and the UK. First played at Civillian's birthday at the Anza Club in September 2023, just took me a while to circle back and do a proper recording of it. Massive love and respect to the artists who created this music and black music culture as a whole for keeping our booties bouncing.

(I could still use your help shining a light on a track I posted two days ago.  "Say You Love Me" has been abandoned by the algorithms...with less than one-fifth of the number of listens than nearly every other Interbay track posted to SoundCloud--and it doesn't deserve such a fate.  It's a solid under-four minute mutant pop track that I bet you'd like.  So...don't listen to this latest post just yet.  Go back and listen to "Say You Love Me" and THEN come back and listen to today's track.  Thank you!)  

DISCLAIMER:  "Polyamorous Polyrhythms" is not a serious take on polyamory, nor is it a satire of polyamorous relationships...nor is it a sign of my approval or disapproval of said relationships.  (Though, I have no real problem with them...and I have a couple of friends in committed polyamorous relationships and they seem happy, so yay!)  I can sometimes do songs about topics without being an advocate/supporter or antagonist/disputer of those topics.  (Indeed, sometimes I do songs just because a word sounds cool to me.)  

...and, just for the record, I am not in a polyamorous relationship (I am sadly widowed and sadly single...and, sadly, likely to stay that way)...and though, to my discomfort, I will say that when I was young (which seems...SO long ago--and getting longer every day) I may have been polyamorous...when I was not in a polyamorous relationship(s)--and I would do better at that now.  

THIS TRACK STARTED AS A MISTAKE!  I wanted to use some plugins that I'd never used before--that's a good way to fuel the creative machine.  I thought I knew what bass sound I wanted to find until I stumbled on one of the bass sounds that I've used in today's track, which sounded like an electrified double bass being tapped by a metal rod instead of being played properly.  

Then, I opened a drum machine I'd never used...and in wanting to hear the sound in context, I just dumped a bunch of sounds from it into a loop...and I kind of liked it--but didn't know what sort of song I might make out of it.  So, I opened up ANOTHER drum machine I'd never used before (HOW MANY DO I HAVE???) and did the same thing...and got the same result--interesting, but for what?  

Then, by accident, I played those two loops from those two different drum machines AND the simple bass pattern I'd made from that strange sound ing bass...and I thought it sounded...good???  I would have never purposefully made it--but it kind of worked (especially when I put an "old radio" filter on one of the drum loops so the two concurrent drum loops didn't muddy each other up.  

The beat wasn't entirely stable, but it worked.  And my ever more diminished brain tried to think of the word "polyrhythm" to describe it...but, by mistake, landed on the word "polyamory" instead--which I thought was funny...funny enough to make it the track title and to work on it some more.  

This one is ALL over the place.  You've got two--no, wait...THREE drum machines, some shakers, some timbales, I finally got to use a berimbau in a track (going all the way back to my Eau Claire days, I got to meet a band where the berimbau was their lead instrument...it has fascinated me since--and talk about a stringed instrument getting hit by a stick!  BERIMBAU!!!)  You'll hear saxophones and Spanish guitars and acid synths and all kinds of things that you never knew you needed in your life.  

...you don't have to restrain yourself to just loving one thing, you can open your world to more!  

And, thus..."Polyamorous Polyrhythms."  

By the strictest definition, I'm not sure I can even classify this track as incorporating a true "polyrhythm"...but it's close enough for rock and roll!
