David Paton is the singer, songwriter, and bass player with the group Pilot. He's written the worldwide hits "Magic", "January", and "Just a Smile". He was a member of The Alan Parsons Project for ten years and did session work with The Pretenders, Paul McCartney, Kate Bush, Chris De Burgh, Chris Rea, and Jimmy Page. He also spent three years touring the world and recording as bassist for Elton John. He performed with Elton at 1985’s Live Aid.

David has some amazing stories to tell about the creation of the hit singles “Magic” and “January”, Elton John’s “Nikita”, the Pretenders' “I’ll Stand By You", what it was like recording with Jimmy Page and Kate Bush, performing with Rick Wakeman and more. They’re all part of his brand new book Magic: The David Paton Story!

Let me share my journey with you. I started DJing at 16, playing school events in Sydney alongside my mate David. By the time I was 19, I had broken into the Sydney club scene, finally stepping into the career I had always dreamed of. From the very beginning, I was passionate about playing uplifting music—there's nothing worse than being in a club with a DJ who doesn't know how to get the crowd moving.

Over time, I made my way into the heart of Sydney’s nightlife. The 90s were the golden era for DJs—the energy was electric, the music was explosive, and the vibe was unforgettable. I had the privilege of being trained by some of the best and working with top talent in the city. That’s where I truly found my groove.

Honestly, I wish the magic of 90s music had never faded, but times changed. In the early 2000s, I hung up my headphones and turned to producing club tracks, especially since so many artists weren’t releasing proper club mixes. Still, I never stopped DJing—I just evolved and moved into a new realm.

J'étudie la pratique de l'orgue Jazz à l'âge de 14 ans à Paris avec Armand Motta (pianiste de Barbara , Brassens) et j'ai mon premier synthé en 1976. Des études musicales en section T1 Musique au Lycée de Sèvres, avec dans la classe : Louis Winsberg du groupe Sixun et  Ludovic de Preissac. Je fais à l'époque partie de différents groupes pop/rock/funk et fais des rencontres musicales enrichissantes à l'aube des années 80 au Studio Vitamines à Gentilly et au Studio Witas à Chaville. En 1988, je découvre la MAO et je m'enferme alors avec synthés et ordis pendant pas mal de temps pour explorer tout ça et commencer à composer sérieusement. Passionné par le Jazz, l'énergie du Funk, j'aime la fusion des styles (electro/acid jazz/drum & bass/musiques du Monde). Quelque temps en 2006 au sein de Atif and Soul People et de Notsos sur Versailles. Mes claviers préferés sont l'orgue Hammond, le Fender Rhodes, le Wurlitzer et bien sur les synthés analogiques au gros son bien funky. 

Les rencontres qui m'on marqué : Rhoda Scott en 1974 au Club St Germain, Bertrand Richard (p.) qui m'a montré mes premiers accords de Blues, Philippe Khalifa (gt.), Stephan Gibu (dr. & bs.) des groupes de funk/gospel "Ray Sidney Firm Soundation" et "Soul Activation", Loïc "Gambas" Bordas (Funkadelic/Parliament) (sax & bs.), Bernard Le Bellego, Emmanuel Barrache (gt. harmo.) des groupes "Quai Ouest" et "Chicago Line Blues Gang" , Patrice Barreau (dr.), les musiciens de 'Atif and Soul People' et de 'Notsos'.

Différents métiers : webmaster, infographiste, vendeur de pianos/orgues (Hammond, Gem, Viscount, Oberheim), Promotion d'artiste. 

Influences :
Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Eddy Louiss, Ricky Peterson, les légendes de la soul, du funk, du jazz, la NewSoul et la musique électronique.

Une admiration sans borne pour : George Duke, Gino Vannelli, Prince et H.E.R.

I am a Boston, MA-based jazz/rock keyboardist and bassist with a passion for creating rich, layered cover song recordings in my home studio.

In my recordings, I bring every part of a song to life, performing all keyboard lines, strings, pads, marimba, glockenspiel, and celesta, while also laying down the bass on many of my tracks. By blending technical precision with multi-instrumental creativity, I reinterpret cover tunes in fresh, expressive ways, giving each song a unique voice. 

Whether exploring intricate jazz harmonies or driving rock grooves, my goal is to create rich, layered performances that capture the spirit of the originals while showcasing my own musical vision.
