Surprise! here's a little cover of lana's song "video games". I'm currently covering songs by artists who released/wrote songs at my current age. At 26yrs old Lana had just released her self-edited hit video for 'video games' and performed her first show live under the 'lana del rey' title.

The song is about moments of jealousy that override all logic. Those moments when your blood just runs so hot and you cannot help but to act on impulse, even though there is a voice in your head saying, “don't do it, slow down” but you do it anyway because, possessed by jealousy, indulging in that impulse feels so satisfying. It feels like you have the power to take down a whole kingdom and squish anyone that stands in your way. Simultaneously, your logical mind is begging you not to. 

Usually, after giving into the impulse, there is a huge wave of embarrassment that swallows you. Once the emotions have settled, and you’ve come back to your senses, you tell yourself it’s the last time you will give into that urge but you silently know it may not be that easy.

“Sag is about this dreaded ‘Allston to Bushwick’ pipeline we have in Boston. A lot of musicians end up using Boston to cut their teeth before heading off to New York or LA to pursue their music careers. I wrote ‘Sag’ when I was really playing the ‘comparison game’ in my head, and asking myself what role I wanted music to play in my life. It was the first in a batch about looking at yourself in relation to the others around you, and trying to decipher who you are without that context.“ – Brendan Wright (they/them)

“When I wrote Felt, I was fairly fresh out of a breakup and was spending a lot of time looking for distractions. Instead of tackling some bigger questions and engaging in a healthy recovery, I was tucking away my feelings into compartments and distracting myself with casual dating. I was spending some late nights slipping into the backstories of strangers' lives - exhilarating, but merely theatrical. It never eased the issue at hand. “Moab was a song I wrote about trying to let go. At the time I was defining myself by expectations of a strained relationship. I was feeling pretty insane - like the kind of insane you feel back in 8th grade where you come home crying all of the time because you have absolutely no sense of self. Writing ‘Moab’ offered catharsis. Looking back, I feel a lot of embarrassment around those feelings, - but it was how I felt at the time and that was the place I was in. “There’s this older man I work with - a kooky gentleman who’s kind of off his rocker - but at the same time can incite this erudite understanding of the human condition. When I asked him if he had any advice for someone really mulling over some heartache, he chuckled. He said, “an artist cannot paint a tree, unless they examine all aspects of it.” I wrote, Painting of a Tree, as an homage to this idea that this kind of hurt was a truly human experience. A kind of pain I wouldn’t wish on anyone, but something that I feel thankful to have experienced. The kind of pain that makes us who we are.” – Brendan Wright (they/them)
