In this solo podcast episode I discuss why I believe Pure Krill oil is SUPERIOR to Fish oil and have done for almost 10 years now. 
Pure Krill oil has a phospholipid backbone which makes the DHA and EPA it contains more bioavailable and efficacious.  I recommend avoiding nearly all commercial fish oil supplements, because the DHA and EPA are delivered in the form of ethyl esters.  Ethyl esters are the least bioavailable and cheapest form of omega-3.
But a new lysophospholipid form of DHA found in Krill oil shows promise for preventing macular decline that often occurs alongside chronic inflammation and diseases like Alzheimer’s and diabetes. Whereas the DHA in most fish oil supplements cannot reach the retina, where DHA

Leading researchers at the Brain and Mind Centre are finding solutions for dementia, the second leading cause of death among all Australians and soon it will be the first, according to Dementia Australia. 

Neuroscientist Eleanor Drummond recently made some exciting headway in identifying proteins that are altered in the brain in the very first stages of Alzheimer’s disease and discovery of a new potential biomarker, and is currently working on translating this into the development of new drugs and biomarkers.

Clinician and researcher Olivier Piguet specialises in frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and related younger-onset dementias. His successful intervention methods targeting behaviour and language have shown to improve quality of life and independence in patients and their families, reducing burden of care.  

Gilbert Knaggs is a researcher in sociology, and brings perspective on the ethics of dementia prevention, as well as concepts of ageing well and healthy ageing in society.

I was a late in life baby and she is 101 years old and she is still kicking!   I am in awe of all the things she has seen in her lifetime. Episode 35 - The GUIDE Model – Integrated Dementia Care and Respite Care

BUFFALO, NY — November 25, 2025 — A new #research paper was #published in Volume 17, Issue 10 of Aging-US on October 13, 2025, titled “Hospitalization with infections and risk of Dementia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.”

This large-scale meta-analysis, led by first author Wei Yu Chua from the National University of Singapore and corresponding author Eng-King Tan from the National Neuroscience Institute and Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore, shows that adults hospitalized with infections have a significantly higher risk of developing dementia. The findings are especially important as global populations grow older and hospitalizations for infections increase, highlighting a potential new approach for dementia prevention.

“Out of 1900 studies that were screened initially, 16 studies comprising 4,266,276 patients were included for analysis.” 

The researchers analyzed data from over 4 million individuals across 16 studies, making this study the most comprehensive review to date on the association between infection-related hospital stays and long-term brain health. The results showed that being hospitalized for an infection raised the risk of all-cause dementia by 83%. Among the types of infections studied, sepsis carried the highest risk, followed by pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and skin or soft tissue infections. The risk of developing vascular dementia was notably higher than that of Alzheimer’s disease.

One possible explanation for the association between infections and dementia is that infections trigger systemic inflammation that may reach the brain. Inflammatory molecules can cross the blood-brain barrier, potentially leading to the buildup of damaging proteins and the death of brain cells. This process may be more severe in older adults, whose immune systems are often slower to respond and recover. The study also suggests that even a single infection-related hospitalization can speed up cognitive decline, especially in individuals already at higher risk.

Importantly, the risk of dementia was greatest within the first year following an infection but remained elevated for many years afterward. In fact, studies with follow-ups longer than a decade showed even stronger associations. These results suggest the need for early cognitive monitoring after hospital discharge, particularly in older adults recovering from infections.

These findings have important implications for healthcare systems, particularly those serving aging populations, and underscore the lasting impact that infections can have on the brain. This research highlights the importance of looking beyond genetics and lifestyle for prevention strategies. With over 50 million people affected by dementia worldwide and annual care costs in the U.S. exceeding $300 billion, identifying new and preventable risk factors is critical. Reducing infections, improving hospital care, and monitoring brain health after illness may offer promising ways to protect cognitive function in aging populations.

Raised in Concrete Washington, I learned to play the guitar when I was 12 years old.  We had a music teacher by the name of Daryl Cooper who was like my older brother.  He started a guitar class and I couldn't wait to be in it.  By the 2nd or 3rd week I had probably outgrown the class but I enjoyed every minute of it.  I was in his band by the time I was 14 playing dances all over Western Washington.  I was awarded the National Choral Award Scholarship my senior year of high school.  This goes to one student in the United States.  I wasn't smart enough to use it.  I joined the United States Navy in 1979 and stayed for almost 22 years.  During that time I was a submariner and eventually the pilot of a small submersible (DSV3 Turtle) that would dive to 10,000 feet deep.  I was in bands playing guitar and singing throughout my military career.  We actually had a couple songs play on DC101 in the 80's.  Now in my 60's, I'm able to relax and write songs without any pressure or dreams of grandeur.  I like the songs I write and hope you like them too.

Hello listener -  I am singing and writing my way through intense grief.  I record everything myself in GarageBand: singing every harmony, playing acoustic rhythm guitar, V-Drums, and percussion. I use outside stem tracks wherever I want extra instrumentation. This is a true DIY process — heartfelt, handmade, and on a shoestring budget — but I’m learning and improving with every track.  I've been going through intensive mixing and mastering training so that I can get all my songs out of DEMO mode.

My signature sound is acoustic-driven songs with a 3-4 octave range layered with rich three- and four-part harmonies. I move between genres depending on the mood of each song, but I always stay true to what feels honest. I’m a throwback rocker-hippie soul who writes straight from the heart — vulnerable, real, and unfiltered.

I spent years performing covers in Las Vegas and the San Francisco Bay Area, covering artists from rock, jazz, pop, funk and metal. After a long break to focus on family, life brought me to the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. Surrounded by forest, ocean, and the distant silhouette of Vancouver Island, I found a peace I had never known. I bought myself a Johnny Cash Martin guitar and started recording covers that helped me heal.

That process reopened a creative door I thought had closed. My poetry and life stories turned into songs, and over the next year and a half I wrote what became my first 30 songs.

When I perform live, I use a Roland Cube EX amp, my Johnny Cash Martin guitar, a Shure mic and in-ears, and a MacBook Pro running through a Scarlett Solo for my backing tracks. Technology is what makes this OneWomanBand journey possible, and I’m deeply grateful for it.

To Erika, Rachel, Brooklynn, Rylie, and Lukas — you are forever in my heart. This music is the legacy of love I leave for you. I used to sing silly songs with you every chance I got. Since losing you in 2019, writing and performing is how I manage that loss. I will never stop hoping to see you again.
