Eric Keenaghan is Associate Professor and Chair in the Department of English at the University at Albany, SUNY. He is the author of Queering Cold War Poetry. Rowena Kennedy-Epstein is Associate Professor of gender studies and twentieth- and twenty-first-century women's writing at the University of Bristol. She is the author of Unfinished Spirit and editor of Rukeyser's Savage Coast.

We spoke to Eric and Rowena about Muriel Rukeyser’s life and legacy, why much of her writing was actively suppressed during her time, and how reading Rukeyser’s prose helps us better understand her ideas, her career, and her poetry.

THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER is a famous short story, a work of American Gothic fiction, written by Edgar Allan Poe. The tale was published in 1839 in Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine, and then, after a revision, included in the collection Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque. The story contains Poe’s poem “The Haunted Palace”, which has been published separately. 

The story has inspired tellings and adaptations stage, radio, television, opera, musical theater, and film. The best known film adaptation is Roger Corman’s HOUSE OF USHER (1960) written by Richard Mathewson and starring Vincent Price. The best on television, is Mike Flanagan’s Netflix Limited Series from 2023, THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF USHER. Starring Bruce Greenwood, Carla Gugino, Mary McDonnell, Henry Thomas, Mark Hamill, T’Nia Miller, Samantha Sloyan, Kate  Siegel, Ruth Codd, Kyliegh Curran, Carl Lumby, Katie Parker, and Mark Redfield.

Since May 2021, G19: The Graduate Student Collective of C19 has produced and published The New Book Forum, an online interview series that facilitates conversations between graduate students and the author of a recent book in the field of 19th-century American literature. This episode is hosted by the forum’s founders, Rachael DeWitt (Columbia University), Max Chapnick (Northeastern University), and Allison (Ally) Fulton (University of California Davis) who discuss the project’s beginnings and the insights they’ve gleaned since. They share a short selection from an April 2023 interview with Autumn Womack on her book The Matter of Black Living (2022), and then reflect on three years of conversations on new directions in the field, scholarly publication, and bringing the nineteenth century into the classroom. Was it a plan to make music with this text? No, absolutely not. I wanted some text on the music I was making, but I did not have any lyrics yet. The first thing I saw on my desk was the Selected Writings Pinguin Pocket by Edgar Allen Poe. I used the text on the page where it fell open; page 262 in the 1977 edition. The plan was to make some lyrics for it later, but I stopped working on this, so I didn't. But now, after a few years, I think, why not call it a song the way it is. So here it is, ready for the world, I hope you like it.
