Ousmane K Power-Green, The Confessions of Matthew Strong

Critical theorist Alberto Toscano sits down with Am Johal to discuss the emergence of critical theory alongside fascism's rise in the 1920s and 30s. He speaks of Georges Sorel as a politically radical figure from the time period, highlights the role of political violence in the emergence of fascism, and delves into contemporary American currents of fascism –  particularly focusing on the racialized form of state terror present in the United States.

From there, Alberto discusses the concept of fascism and its continued relationship to settler colonial formations, its association with extreme neoliberalism, and the importance of figures like Aimé Césaire, W. E. B. Du Bois, Angela Davis, and George Jackson in emphasising manifestations of racial fascism. He acknowledges the complexity of using terms like American fascism, and mentions the need to understand the dynamics and political economy underlying the far-right movements in the U.S., which are the result of white homogeneity and privileged groups imagining their annihilation and victimisation.

Bio:
Alberto Toscano is Reader in Critical Theory at the Department of Sociology, Goldsmiths, University of London, where he co-directs the Centre for Philosophy and Critical Thought. He is Visiting Faculty at the Digital Democracy Institute, School of Communication, SFU.

Alberto’s current research is divided into three main strands: a theoretical inquiry into contemporary authoritarian trends and their dis/analogies with their historical predecessors, culminating in the forthcoming book Late Fascism (Verso, 2021); the study of tragedy as a framework through which to understand political action and its discontents, from decolonisation to environmentalism; and the development of ‘real abstraction’ as a heuristic for the analysis contemporary capitalism, notably in its nexus with processes of racialisation. As the series editor of The Italian List for Calcutta-based publisher Seagull books, Alberto’s research is also concerned with the translation and reception of Italian literature, literary criticism and critical theory.

In recent years we've spent a lot of time arguing about fascism – what it means, what it looks like, and how we would know if it had returned. That typically brings us back to the European fascism of '30s and '40s, with its uniforms, symbols, marches and camps. 

But the philosopher Alberto Toscano, currently teaching at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, wants us to look beyond historical comparisons to think of fascism not as an aberration, but as an aspect of a much longer process of colonial domination. 

He talks to Richard Hames about the uncomfortable connections between liberalism and fascism, drawing on ideas from Angela Davis, W. E. B. Du Bois and Theodor Adorno and thinking about racial fascism, conspiracy theory, climate denialism and the far-right in Israel.

Publicada en 1974, mientras Angela Davis tenía apenas 28 años, su autobiografía emerge como un trascendental revelador del panorama de las luchas sociales que atravesó Estados Unidos durante las décadas de los sesenta y setenta. Durante este tiempo, Davis se convirtió en un ícono del Movimiento de Liberación Negro.

En las páginas de este relato autobiográfico, Davis nos brinda una visión particular desde su perspectiva como militante afroamericana, inmersa en el torbellino del movimiento negro y el feminismo en uno de los periodos más convulsionados de la política contemporánea. Aquí, el imperialismo estadounidense se encontraba en una posición defensiva tanto en el ámbito internacional (con el conflicto de Vietnam y los frentes de liberación) como en su propio territorio. Fue durante este periodo que Davis fue perseguida y encarcelada por diversas autoridades, siendo falsamente acusada de secuestro, conspiración y asesinato.

En lugar de concebir meramente ideas abstractas, teorías o ejercicios intelectuales triviales, encontramos en estas páginas una profunda preocupación por la dignidad humana en un momento histórico en el que la lucha por estos valores se libraba en una encarnizada batalla a vida o muerte. Davis luchó por la vida de otros como si se tratara de su propia existencia.

The problem didn't start in Parkland, however; it started in Oakland, and it spread as a result of pressures coming from the Office of Civil Rights in Obama's Department of Education well over a decade ago. As with so much in Woke education, the problem is infinitely worse and more fraudulent than one has any right to expect.
