Peebles-McCrary Home

The Sangamon Story is a collection of selected readings From Francis Grierson's, The Valley of Shadows, written about his childhood growing up on the prairies of Illinois in the years leading up to the Civil War. It was a volatile region that was neither north nor south, neither for slavery nor against it. 

Written in an authentic prairie vernacular, Grierson's book deals with slavery and abolition, and tells a story about his family's fight against slavery and how their small farm became an unexpected stop on the Underground Railroad. 

Originally published in 1909, the Valley of Shadows received some critical acclaim, but has since fallen into obscurity, and has become a lost American classic. Hopefully, it will finally gain the recognition that has eluded it for more than a century.
