Fugitive Structures: The Bauhaus Building in Dessau is a series of five risograph images remediating the Bauhaus building in Dessau. Highlighting the ways in which the Dessau building and its photographic archive have been repeatedly subject to destructive political, cultural, and environmental forces, we transform these early photographs and contemporary heritage documentation of the building as examples of what we call anarchival materiality, or the generative force of entropy in archives. The anarchival force of molecular transformation, violence, displacement, and other human and non-human interactions render archival materials as fugitives, both eluding and driving preservation. The risographs show the mutable value of objects as they become fugitives (anarchival) and then archival again in new contexts and media.

The Risograph is an offset ink printing machine notorious for unpredictability and imperfection and misalignments of cyan, magenta, and yellow layers when making a color copy. Working with this machine we co-created misaligned risograph images to unbind the building and archive from a narrative of stability and permanence. Our images suggest that the Dessau building, envisioned by Walter Gropius as a manifesto of the Bauhaus idea and promoted largely without crediting the photographer, Lucia Moholy, exists as an entropic fugitive archive that is as precarious as it is iconic. How does considering the Dessau building through a critical feminist ethos of anarchival materiality suggest an alternative reading of Bauhaus histories and futures? The risograph images represent our collaborative practice of image making between art and anthropology, and were produced as a method for writing about the Bauhaus for its centennial year.

Kate Hennessy and Trudi Lynn Smith are anthropologists and practising artists that have worked together as curators and collaborators since 2009 as a part of Ethnographic Terminalia, an international curatorial collective exhibiting and creating works at the intersection of art and anthropology. Hennessy is an Associate Professor at Simon Fraser University’s School of Interactive Arts and Technology, where she leads the Making Culture Lab, an interdisciplinary research and production studio. Smith is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the School of Environmental Studies at the University of Victoria, and recently held the position of artist-in-residence with Hennessy in the Making Culture Lab. Together they explore cultural practices of media, museums, and archives in the context of technoscience. Their art practice in video, photography and text has engaged with entropy in diverse collections and the ecological, social, and political impacts of new digital memory infrastructures. As ethnographers as well as artists, Hennessy and Smith highlight collaboration as a central aspect of their work, working with both human and non-human entities to represent the politics of the material world and its relationships with human agency.

Did you know that a baby’s brain absorbs information faster in their first 3 years than at any other time in their life?

No, not the kind of information that helps you distinguish the difference between left and right, up and down, or right from wrong (though many babies can, and do, begin to learn these basics during their first years)… I’m talking about learning information through observation, and take it from someone who spent a lot of time studying them in school… a baby’s brain doesn’t miss anything.

For a lot of parents, this is great news! Instead of teaching a child good manners the same way a teacher explains to a student why Jane has 2 apples left to sell after Adam bought 1, a parent can actively model what good manners look like and sound like. Instead of reading about it in a book or learning about it in a classroom, a parent can model that behavior, allowing the child to see it, in real time, on repeat.

The flip side of this indiscriminate information superhighway is that children often pick up on negative behaviors, too. Manners, sharing, teamwork, and respect are just a few values children are exposed to through passive observation. So, what happens to society when new generations of children are observing a growing rift between those who hold different values on subjects like racism and diversity? On this week’s episode, Sophia and I deep dive into all things racism; how being exposed to racism at different ages can impact how one thinks about race, about their own personal identity, and how Sophia’s study of eastern cultural anthropology has shifted her mindset altogether. Psych 101: Racism is Learned

We are delighted to bring you a conversation between Matt, Tim, and Professor of Anthropology and Director of the Graduate Institute for Design, Ethnography, and Social Thought at The New School, Hugh Raffles. Raffles is the author of three books. The first of which, In Amazonia: A Natural History, is an ethnography about how rivers and humans co-constitute one another in the east Amazon of Brazil. Raffles’ second book, Insectopedia, is a collection of tales about humans and insects that takes us from the discovery of language among bees to artistic representations of contaminated butterfly wings in Chernobyl. His most recent book, The Book of Unconformities: Speculations on Lost Time, is a bracing tale of time, memory, and loss, written through stories of stone. Across all three books Raffles has developed a deeply philosophical, historical, and poetic way of writing stories anthropologically that remain open to readers beyond the academy. What Raffles does with these subjects, in researching and writing about them, is somewhat alchemical, spinning them into meditations on humanity that are searing, deep, and evocative, like art; his fascination on the page is contagious. We hope you enjoy this conversation with Hugh Raffles, on his career and process, what he is learning from newer generations of anthropologists, crafting an authorly voice, and supporting others to find and craft theirs.

This week we bring you a special collaboration between The Familiar Strange and the Australian Network of Student Anthropologists or ANSA. In this special collaboration, Familiar Stranger Alex sits down with Hanne Worsoe and Dr Romy Listo to discuss some of the difficulties that arise from working in particularly intense or distressing field sites. Throughout the conversation they model some of the methods that can benefit new PhD students who are potentially entering into their field work.

With this third installment of the JSW Radio Archive we begin a three-part bilingual reading taken from the autumn 2014 issue of Journal of the Southwest, a special issue featuring a translation of the book, Entre Yoris y Guarijíos: Crónicas sobre El Quehacer Antropológico, written by Dr. María Teresa Valdivia Dounce. Dr. Valdivia, a researcher and professor in the Instituto de Investigaciones Antropológicas at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. In the late 1970s, Valdivia traveled with a team of medical doctors, agronomists and social workers, all in the employ of Mexico’s Instituto Nacional Indigenista, to improve the living conditions of the Guarijío Indigenous people of the Sierra Madre Occidental. Valdivia’s book is both an autobiographical account of her efforts to help the Guarijíos in their land struggle with non-Indigenous ranchers and farmers (“Yoris”), and a thoughtful reflection on fieldwork in anthropology. Reading the Spanish-language version is Dr. Jéssica Retis, a professor of journalism at the University of Arizona.

Amanda Logan on her book The Scarcity Slot: Excavating Histories of Food Security in Ghana

This week we’d like to introduce a new Familiar Stranger, Jarrod Sim! Jarrod is a PhD student at the school of Archaeology and Anthropology at the Australian National University. His current research is an anthropologically-led study of how landscape has shaped the auditory cultures of a Paiwanese community in Taiwan. He investigates and comprehends sound as layered and is interested in its role in contemporary understandings of culture. Welcome Jarrod! 

This week’s panel centres around the various sounds of fieldwork. Jarrod’s work with the Paiwanese community got us thinking about how our respective field sites sounded and how sound is a really integral part of fieldwork. We also dive into the difficulties of conducting ethnomusicology online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

We then discuss a question sent in by a listener! They wanted to know what kind of considerations the strangers made when choosing a field site and what were some of the practical constraints that had to be considered.
