Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, veterans, serving members of our armed forces, and fellow Australians, 

This morning, we are gathered on [Gadigal] Country and we acknowledge and pay our respect to their Elders past, present and emerging.

I pay my respect to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have contributed to the defence of Australia in times of peace and war, and I would also like to acknowledge all current and former members of the Australian Defence Force here with us today, as well as the family members of Defence personnel.

Thank you for your service and sacrifice, and thank you to the families of our Defence personnel for all your contributions and the support you provide to your loved ones.

Today, we gather on this hallowed ground to commemorate Anzac Day, a day that holds profound significance in the hearts of all Australians. It is a day of remembrance, reflection, and gratitude – a day when we come together to honour the bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering spirit of those who have served our nation. 

On this day, we pay tribute to the Anzacs, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, who landed on the shores of Gallipoli in 1915. These brave men exemplified the spirit of our nation as they faced adversity, showing courage, resilience, and mateship amidst the chaos of battle. Although their campaign at Gallipoli did not end in victory, their sacrifice and determination laid the foundation for the Anzac legend. 

Since then, Anzac Day has grown to encompass all who have served our country in times of conflict and peace. It is a day when we honour not only the brave soldiers of Gallipoli but also those who fought in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and many other conflicts. We remember the sacrifices made by those who never returned and the enduring impact on their families and loved ones. 

Today, we also recognise our current serving members, those men and women who continue to carry the torch of service and sacrifice. Their commitment to protecting our nation, both at home and abroad, is a testament to the values that define us as Australians – integrity, honour, and selflessness. 

Anzac Day is not only about remembering the past; it is about drawing inspiration from the bravery and resilience of those who have served. It is a day to reaffirm our commitment to the principles for which they fought – to stand united, shoulder to shoulder, and defend the freedoms we hold dear. 

It is also a day to remember the families and loved ones of our veterans, who continue to support them during their service and beyond. The burden of separation, the fear of the unknown, and the grief of loss are challenges they face with courage and fortitude. Their strength is the backbone of our defence forces and an integral part of our Anzac story. 

In our communities, the Anzac spirit is alive and well. It is present in the acts of kindness, respect, and support we offer to one another. It is in the stories we share, the memories we hold dear, and the commitment to never forget the sacrifices made. 

As we stand here today, let us not only remember but also recommit ourselves to the values of compassion, inclusivity, and understanding. Let us strive to create a world where conflicts are resolved peacefully, where the voices of all are heard, and where every individual can live without fear and in freedom. 

In conclusion, when we observe a minute of silence to honour the fallen, we can reflect on their service, and to rekindle the Anzac spirit within ourselves. As we move forward, let us carry the Anzac legacy in our hearts, forever grateful for the sacrifices made by our service men and women.
