Synopsis

The intent in recording this album was to preserve Coye Phillips’ voice, performance and his musical traditions reflecting his upbringing in the mountains of East Tennessee. All songs were chosen by Phillips and reflect a wide range of country, folk, bluegrass and gospel music familiar to him and representing his life and legacy. All tracks were recorded with consideration to clearly exhibit his voice and guitar performance. All additional instruments and their roles were both dictated and chosen by Phillips. Minimal audio editing was done to each track including some leveling and frequency equalization. As a result, some additional extraneous sounds including some finger tapping on the guitar body were left in the mix as it contributes to Phillips’ guitar methods and the authenticity of his performance.

This program features a special selection of conversations with Appalachian African Americans. There's no Appalachian history without Black history. Despite so many of the stereotypes about this region, African Americans have long been a vital part of the fabric of mountain communities. As part of a project called AppalHealth, we've been conducting oral history interviews with Black East Kentuckians, talking to people both about their lives and experiences in general, and also asking folks in particular about their experiences with healthcare. The interviews were led by Appalshop's Tiffany Sturdivant, and  Tiffany will take things from here.

Diabetes is a very serious disease that can lead to loss of limbs, heart disease, kidney failure, stroke, blindness, and death. Kentucky has the 9th highest death rate from diabetes in the nation. The good news is that Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or managed. Individuals with prediabetes can cut their risk of getting type 2 diabetes IN HALF by losing weight, eating healthy food and being more active. People with diabetes can get help from health care providers and take these same steps to manage their diabetes and even put it in remission. Somewhere in the humming glow lies a field past the great beyond, between dusk and signal loss, this mix charts a course from warped downtempo into time-folding trip-hop, fractured ambient, break sensibilities, and glitch-smeared bass mutations. It begins with fog on the blue ridgeline and ends in folded time, ghost radio transmissions from past futures, reflecting, refracting, reimagining!

Threaded with warped transmissions and rarest cuts from myself and 
Lanark Artefax, Portishead, SYZ, Delay Grounds, Massive Attack, Vivian Koch, Bufiman, Pugilist, Otik, Polygonia, Joe, Tristan Arp, DJRUM, Nikki Nair, Leif, Helium, Product Toss, Ziyiz, Shadowax, Minor Science plus much  more! this is a five-hour descent/ascent through psychoacoustic contours and Appalachian afterimages. Grainy warmth collides with spectral tension. Memory loops. Bass buckles. Voices blur.
