Whilst Director of Archaeological Excavations at the University of Chester, Peter Davey was involved in a reactive dig of the East Gate at Chester after the sewers broke.
As they dug down, they made discoveries which one local published historian was excited to see in person.
Peter Davey was more than pleased to take him down the pit, but had failed to warn him of the hoard of longtails that ran through there from the open sewer twice a day...!

Memories of Sheila Cregeen

In this chapter we talk with Hannah Cornish, curator at the Grant Museum of Zoology, UCL with Thomas Kador, Lecturer in Creative Health on the UCL Arts & Sciences programme. Hannah provides intellectual access to a collection of 68,000 specimens. She designs and facilitates museum teaching, collaborating with researchers and artists, managing collection documentation, and working on events, exhibitions, and projects. Thomas has a background in archaeology and chemical engineering. His research and teaching interests include object-based learning, culture, health and wellbeing, public and community-based approaches to heritage and everyday practices. Together we discuss body stones as liminal objects, their preservation, collection, and biographies. We explore the many layers of meaning that can be read and see what we can add to their story.

We follow the long debate over whether and where the remains of the ancient legendary city of Troy could be found, and we see how the mystery was solved by the excavations overseen by the brilliant, ruthless, and indefatigable German businessman, explorer, and serial liar, Heinrich Schliemann.

Pt. 2 will examine how modern scholars and excavators have used the finds from the site in Turkey -- including the long lost priceless "Treasure of Priam" -- to reconstruct the city and its place in the Bronze-Age world.

In this chapter we talk with the Geologist David Dobson. David is a Professor of Earth Materials at UCL. His research focuses on high-pressure physical property measurements, from sudotakalytes in the Earth's crust to mantle reology and deep earthquakes, as well as the reologys of magma and terrestrial planetary cores. Out of the lab, he enjoys being out in the mountains, unusually migrating north towards the colder climes of Scotland for the winter. GEOLOGICAL MATERIAL

We journey through the different eras and incarnations of Troy as archaeologists have reconstructed them from the excavations at Hissarlik. We then explore the surviving evidence -- including linguistic theories, newly discovered tablets from the ancient Hittite capital, and the long-lost and rediscovered "Priam's Treasure" that Schliemann unearthed-- to form a picture of who the Trojans were and what sort of city they created in the Bronze Age world.

S4 Ep3 - Society, Space, and Material Agency (w/ Dr. Scott Hutson)

Wendy Doyon (EUME Fellow 2024/25) talk “Ghost Writers of Upper Egypt: Arabic Field Diaries from Egypt and Sudan in the History of Archaeology” was held in the framework of the EUME Berliner Seminar on 15 January 2025. The talk was chaired by Ilona Regulski (Ägyptisches Museum und Papyrussammlung, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin).The seminar was in cooperation with the BEYONDREST Research Group.

In the early part of the twentieth century, the rural community of Quft, Upper Egypt, provided the setting for an ethnographic account of spirit possession among the so-called “fellahin,” a term often associated in popular culture with a traditional and presumably uneducated peasantry from the South of Egypt. Hans Alexander Winkler’s Ghost Riders of Upper Egypt (originally published in 1936) showed the folksy side of village life, but Quft was also home to Egypt’s most elite community of archaeological foremen (rūyasa) known as Quftis, renowned for their advanced knowledge and skills in archaeological excavation since 1895. In this talk, I will present an overview of the Quftis’ historical record as “Ghost Writers of Upper Egypt”: skilled foremen and field technicians whose embodied knowledge lurks behind the monographic publications that make up our body of modern literature about ancient Egypt, the Sudan, and the Middle East. As part of the Quftis’ unpublished written record, the talk will focus on the production of a large archive of Arabic excavation diaries documenting archaeological work in Egypt and Sudan in the first half of the 20th Century. The main corpus of this material includes over 6,500 unique manuscript pages in 73 diary volumes, which form part of archaeological archives at Harvard and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. These diaries were written by two generations of Egyptian foremen in a mixture of Classical, Cairene, and Upper Egyptian Arabic. The presentation will cover aspects of their collective authorship, dialects, narrative voice, challenges of translation, and trans-archival context.
