‘Animal’ was inspired by Dr Eleanor Barraclough’s work on the forest themes and the podcasts that she had produced from that research. Karen conceived 'Animal' as an experimental work in using psychoacoustics in a public urban environment to awaken human instinct learnt over millenia.
Beginning in the modern day, the piece leads the viewer back to the Mesolithic landscape at the end of the last ice age. Extensive research was undertaken to re-create the forest sounds of that time through an immersive multichannel soundscape. A thoughtful moment occurs when the audience find themselves sheltering from the ‘rain’ in a cave, complete with paintings from yet another, much earlier era than the Mesolithic. The human presence in the landscape is the audience themselves, surrounded by the natural sounds and suggestive imagery of a world now lost to us.

“We found ourselves deep in the prehistoric forest edge, exploring the primal conditions from which storytelling emerges. what does a human brain do when given the raw materials of sound and silence, light and darkness, myth and memory? The audience reaction to the final sequence was like nothing I’d experienced.

Episode 4 - Learning, Growing, and Adapting in Graduate School with Lais and Apat

Magic Karen went on a shamanic journey on 27th April 2025 for one of the bowls I was drawing for a project illustrating Neolithic and Iron Age bowls from the Isle of Lewis. The one whose story wanted to be told is a small complete bowl, un-decorated but flecked with mica sparkling in the sun.
"It came by boat, packaged with other wares in dried grasses, to watery landscape and a higher mound with scraggy bushes,.
It was first used as a drinking/eating vessel, managed by an elder woman and passed around a group.
It was repurposed to bless young children. They chose to do this at just before the new moon, as this was believed to protect the children against negative forces. It was then left on top of the mound. Maybe because there was a chip or a crack in it."

Aaron Deter-Wolf is a Prehistoric Archaeologist with the Tennessee Division of Archaeology in Nashville, where his responsibilities include managing ancient Native American sites on State-owned lands and conducting archaeological excavations and research. In addition to his work in Tennessee, for the past decade Aaron has been a leading researcher in developing the archaeological study of tattooing. Those efforts include using contextual analysis and microscopic use-wear signatures to identify tattooing tools in archaeological collections, efforts to systematically document tattoos on mummified human remains, and experiments recreating and testing ancient and historic tattooing implements.

In 2009 Aaron organized the first American academic symposium to examine ancient and early historic Native American tattooing, which culminated in the volume Drawing with Great Needles: Ancient Tattoo Traditions of North America. He is co-editor of the volume Ancient Ink: The Archaeology of Tattooing, and in recent years was part of research teams that identified ancient tattooing tools including a 2,000-year old set of cactus spines from Utah, and 5,000-year old turkey bone needles from Tennessee. He and Ben Robitaille share information about the history of tattooing and body modification on the Instagram account @archaeologyink.

After this track spent ages on the back-burner, we're ready to show you all "Summertime, Vuhu Isles" a track meant for our adventure game in progress called "The Expedition of Vuhu Island" about archaeologists on a fictional tropical island.

For the longest time we weren't sure if this one was finished or not, but now we've decided that it's been a long time since we made this one (approximately 2016-2018 or so), and we're unlikely to revisit it due to hardware failure ages ago (unless Masha sings over it sometime in the future) 

We really hope you like this one, it's a companion piece to "The Bonfire Party".

Tony Toscano is a nationally recognized movie critic and film historian who has been reviewing films for over 4 decades. Tony grew up in Southern California, just outside Los Angeles.

While attending Jr. High School, Toscano began writing a weekly movie review column for his school paper. Directly because of his weekly column, Tony was asked to write a film review column for the San Gabriel Valley Tribune and a music review column for “The record Collector's Journal.”

Always interested in television and film, it’s no surprise Tony's first job was a disc jockey at his hometown radio station and began to review films and interview celebrities as a regular feature of his radio show and “Talking Pictures” was born.

Moving from Los Angeles to Utah to co-host a morning radio show on Utah's KABE FM 107, his film reviews were heard once a week and became a staple of the popular morning program.

Toscano began taking live calls from listeners and discussing current movies.

In 1996 Tony made the jump from radio and newspapers to television as the film critic on CBS in Salt Lake City, and then to KJZZ TV where he hosted the popular "Movie Review Show" and then his own production, "Talking Pictures."

In 2002 Tony was honored with his first Emmy Award as “Best Discussion Program.” In 2007 Toscano received his 2nd Emmy for hosting Talking Pictures.

Taking his award winning program coast to coast, Toscano has been able to syndicate Talking Pictures to over 65 million households around the USA and in nearly 120 countries worldwide.

In May of 2008 “Talking Pictures” moved to ABC-4 and Utah’s CW-30.

Toscano is also the film reviewer and entertainment guru for ABC-4’s “Good Morning Utah" and “Midday."

Additionally, Tony is heard on a number of radio stations across the US, including I Heart Radio's  top- rated “Morning Zoo with Frankie and Jess” on 97.1 ZHT in Salt Lake City, where his reviews have been heard for nearly 2 decades.

His fellow reviewers regard Tony as "one of the country’s best celebrity interviewers." As his in-depth conversations with such notable stars as George Clooney, Harrison Ford, Angelina Jolie, Steven Spielberg, Jeff Goldblum, Gwyneth Paltrow and Denzel Washington show a different and more relaxed side of celebrities.

In 2006 Toscano co-hosted the acclaimed series “Hot Topics” for Atlanta’s ABC affiliate WSB TV.

Working with Utah students in apprenticeships and internship programs, Tony is instrumental in instructing qualified and deserving students in the art of television production.

Tony Toscano is member in good standing of the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA), a former board member of the Salt Lake City Film Center and the founder of the Utah Film Critics Society.

When not previewing, reviewing or interviewing Tony can be found somewhere in the mountains of Utah stream fishing or at his BBQ.
