Another from the backlog! This is the first track I recorded with my very own condenser microphone that I got with my first Scarlett 2i2 audio interface. It's a jam progression I'd play with my friends, very simple and folky. There are some background hits and thumps!

Old Love

In 1932, John D’Angelico established his own shop at the age of 27, after apprenticing with his great uncle for the better part of the preceding two decades. By 1937 his guitar models were standardized, shortly after the first Excel model was recorded in D’Angelico’s ledger. The example offered here dates from 1938. It is a 17” non-cutaway sunburst model built with parallel bracing older-style non-stairstep tailpiece, and standard shaped F-holes.

This D’Angelico offers beautifully warm and expressive mids, and a strong fundamental presence with a lovely compliment of comfortably restrained overtones. With round and balanced treble response and incredible sustain, it's a remarkable solo guitar and has enough power under the hood to hold its own in an ensemble setting as well.  Carved spruce and maple with typically ornate purflings, pearl inlays, gold hardware, and deco pickguard, this is a particularly attractive instrument. It remains in better condition than most of its breed, as these guitars were built for and used daily by professional musicians. The body is crack free, with binding that is in remarkably good shape, and original finish throughout. The
neck has been visibly reset, and there is minor finish damage along the edges of the heel and a minor repaired grain crack under the fretboard on the treble side of the neck. The frets and nut are replacements that appear to be quite recent, and the tailpiece shows a repair at the fold.

The guitar’s neck has a fast and comfortable C-shaped carve, with a 1 st fret depth of .867” and a 9 th fret depth of .965”. The nut width is 1.68”, string spread at the bridge is 2”, and the scale is 24.8”. The frets are Dunlop 6105 (or similar) and measure .090” wide by .055” tall; The board is compound radiused at about 10” to 14”.  The instrument’s cosmetic condition is quite appealing, with crazing, scratches and dents in the finish, but not much mechanical playwear. The back of the neck shows moderately worn sections within the first 5 frets, but nothing unsightly. The guitar’s original Gold Grover StaTites are in excellent shape and work well.

Eastman AR905CE-BD-TC Archtop

Sorrentino guitars were made by Epiphone for Chicago Musical Instruments (CMI) in 1934 and 1935. There are only two private-label Epiphone brands from the 1930s: Sorrentino and Howard, and both are exceptionally rare.  The Sorrentino Lido archtop offered here is congruous to Epiphone’s Blackstone model, but with a few notable upgrades – Gibson styled non-segmented F-holes, bound fretboard, and dots & diamond inlays. Like the Blackstone, the Sorrentino features a 14-3/4” wide body with a carved spruce top and arched mahogany back and sides. The neck has a long 25.5” scale, which distinguishes it from the otherwise similar Gibson L-50 small-body archtops of the period, as does its lack of back bracing and light tone-bar bracing. There’s a Sorrentino serial number label affixed to the inside of the guitar that looks much like the Epiphone labels of the mid 1930s.

This guitar was through our repairshop a few years back for a reset and refret. We installed a new aged ebony bridge at that time, as well, and the original remains in the case pocket. The balance of the guitar is original and unmodified. It is crack-free and, apart from some areas of worn finish, light scratches and minor dings, it is in excellent shape. We’ve set it up with 12-53 nickel bronze strings, which are a nice match. Playability is perfect.

The neck has a very softened V carve that becomes more and more round closer to the heel. The nut width is 1-3/4”, 1st fret depth is .922”, second fret depth is .894” and 9th fret depth is 1.006”. String spread at the bridge is 2-3/16”.

A lovely choice for single-note melodic flatpicking, this Epiphone-made Sorrentino had the mid-range support and rounded woody trebles that a lot of players find particularly appealing in small, older archtops. The tone is of the same DNA as the smaller Epiphone Olympics made famous by David Rawlings.

Eastman AR805-GB Acoustic Archtop

Maurice Dupont has long been known as the premier maker of Gypsy jazz guitars in France. However, his talents by no means end there, as he also produces a line of archtops which rival some of the best makers of jazz guitars. This ATTM 17 features an X braced spruce top, gorgeous flamed maple back and sides, flamed maple neck, ebony headstock veneer, bridge, and heel cap, and maple binding. Hardware includes Schaller tuners, an ebony cello style tailpiece, and a mounted humbucker. Aesthetically this instrument is inspired by the modern, clean look that Jimmy D'Aquisto made famous in the 1980s (i.e. stylized f hole and pickguard shapes, cello style tailpiece, dotless fingerboard, etc.)

Built of entirely solid woods, this 17" instrument produces a rich tone that translates beautifully through the humbucking pickup. Warm, woody, and clear, the natural acoustic resonance of this guitar blends seamlessly with the power and sustain of it's amplified sound. It's a very versatile guitar that would work well for anything from swing, bebop, and even electric Gypsy jazz.

This instrument is in excellent condition with just a few small dings on the body and some mild fretwear. At some point it had a floating pickup so there are some screw holes still visible in the side of the fingerboard.

Finely crafted archtops like this one routinely sell at prices approaching that of a new automobile! If this instrument bore the name of one of the better known American makers, it could easily be 10 times the price. Here's a great opportunity to get a world class archtop at a price that seems too good to be true!
