The Art Fair Murders installation at Avenel with artist Dr. Peter Hill

The installation "The Tree of Lives" seeks to think about connection through words. Leaving a trace of oneself, for oneself and another. Connecting, moving from the self to the whole. 
Connecting to our spirituality, inscribing the issues that animate our time: ethics, ecology, identity and community.

In the form of a participatory work: about a hundred people wrote their own gratitudes and wishes for the future on cloth beforehand. 
The words written in the Tree of Lives are superimposed on each other, they come together and become almost illegible, but they continue to exist as a common prayer, in unison. Its structure is composed of transparent fabric drapes, hardened with flour glue, which take the form of a network of interconnected branches and invade the architectural structure of the exhibition space. These drapes of branches are enriched by a light installation, which creates an immersive atmosphere, between translucence and radiation.

The composer and opera singer Lucie Cure accompanies the installation with an auditory décor of sound textures in which she incorporates her poem "Second Breath", linking it to the other works in the exhibition.

L'installation "l'Arbre de Vies" par les artistes Yoanna Bochowski et Marina Bernardi cherche à penser la connexion par les mots. Laisser une trace de soi, pour soi et pour les autres. Se connecter, passer du soi au tout. 
Se connecter à notre spiritualité, en inscrivant les problématiques qui animent notre temps : l’éthique, l’écologie, l’identité et la communauté.

Sous forme d’œuvre participative : une centaine de personnes ont écrit au préalable leurs propres gratitudes et souhaits pour l’avenir sur des tissus. 
Les mots écrits dans l'Arbre de Vies se superposent, communient et finissent par devenir presque illisibles, mais ils continuent d'exister comme une prière commune, à l’unisson. Sa structure est composée de drapés de tissus en transparence, durcis à base de colle de farine, qui prennent la forme d’un réseau de branches interconnectées et envahissent la structure architecturale du lieu d'exposition. Ces drapés de branches sont enrichis par une installation lumineuse, qui crée une atmosphère immersive, entre translucidité et rayonnement.

La compositrice et chanteuse lyrique Lucie Cure accompagne l’installation par un décor auditif de textures sonores dans lequel elle incorpore son poème 
« Second souffle » le liant aux poèmes suivants:
« Sur l’onde et le ciel » de Marina Bernardi

« Éden » de Yoanna Bochowski

Tree of Lives - Arbre de vies (Art installation - music extract)

This conversation took place on Thursday 20th of July at Galway Arts Centre in conjunction with the solo exhibition ‘Whistling in the Dark’ which was part of the Galway International Arts Festival 2023.

Galway Arts Centre is delighted to present a major new exhibition of photography, collage, film, print and sound work by artist Ruby Wallis curated by Megs Morley as part of the 2023 Galway International Arts Festival.

For Whistling in the Dark the artist forms a site-specific response to aspects of the botanical world she finds within the walls of the Georgian architecture of the Galway Arts Centre – the former residence of  Arabella Waithman, the sister of Irish dramatist, folklorist and co-founder of  the Abbey Theatre,  Lady Augusta Gregory – and the plants ornately embedded in its ceilings, such as acanthus leaves, palm leaves, thistles, and classical Greek symbols.

In a play between order and disorder, taxonomy and the organic, she finds more immediate signs of life and organisms in fungi, as well as the mould in the peeling paint of the gallery walls. This process draws on the eco-feminist thinking, that humans, animals, plants and other living entities can transform in their entwined relationships to one another, agitate and decolonise systems of order and power.

Whistling in the Dark draws on collective and collaborative processes, an ongoing project which launched the publication A Woman Walks Alone at Night, with a Camera in 2022, with writer Phillina Sun. This work links image, video and text through the figure of the flâneuse, framed as a subversive, imaginative explorer. The sound installation Whistling in Space was created in collaboration with musician and composer Michael Smalle. Through the layering of collective female voices, the intention is to break the taboo that for women whistling has been deemed unlucky, unfeminine, ungodly, even coarse and beastly. “A whistling woman and a crowing hen fetches the devil out of his den”.

The collage Swarming is freeing plants and insects from the rigid structures of taxonomy and imperialism, as they swarm up in viral chaotic patterns. The images are sourced from an encyclopedia of insects, photographs from walks in the botanical garden in Paris, and of the acanthus and palm found in the stucco work of the gallery. It was devised by Wallis and co-fabricated by a group of artists/cutters.

Ruby Wallis often works with gendered experiences in photography, installation and the moving image. She engages in a haptic way, using the close-up to simulate touch and direct experience through the lens. Her work focuses on the  immediacy of an embodied approach. She twists and turns, working with fragmentation, shadows and materiality.  Her practice is becoming increasingly collaborative, operating through conversations, sound, images and texts. She is interested in an investigation of intersectional viewpoints to disrupt a singular dominant voice and gaze. She holds a Phd from The National College of Art and Design and lectures at The Burren College of Art. In 2022 Wallis published the photobook, A Woman Walks Alone at Night, With a Camera in collaboration with writer Phillina Sun. Selected exhibitions include This Rural, Lismore Castle Arts; The Lab, Photomuseum Ireland; The Hugh Lane Gallery; PhotoIreland Festival, BX Gallery; The Dock; Vondelbunker: Amsterdam; TULCA; Perlman Teaching Museum; and Solas Nua, USA. Selected publications include The Journal of Artistic Research, The New Yorker magazine, British Journal of Photography, and Winter Papers vol.6 and 7. Her work is held by collections at Rochester Art Centre, USA, and by the National University of Ireland. She is the chair of the board of directors at Engage Art Studios, Galway.

Artist Talk: Ruby Wallace - Whistling in the Dark

This sound piece, typically played on the surface of a drum, is part of an installation where vibration and warmth transform frequency into a tangible sonic material. Conceived as a love letter to the stars, it uses pulsations and echoes to explore connections beyond words.  

Structured as a repetitive loop, it creates a suspended space between the intimate and the vast. Low resonances and rhythmic patterns invite a meditative listening experience, balancing presence and absence in a dialogue between sound and silence.

La Lvcha is a synonym for fuss, it takes on the struggle that is each and every one of the existing inequalities and oppressions. This rebelion is fun, senatorial and filled with expression. 

Sound and vibrations united in one sound experience that goes from the marimba in the colombian Chocó to the german rhythm box. From joy, amusement and carelessness in harmony with surrounding people and the nature that sustains us. 

Music that emerges from instruments that are born from the earth, empanada by latin american artists that bring an african flavour of sustenance and roots. Here, music makes up for the injustices to the rhythm of sounds, inviting every emotion to be celebrated and accepted. 

On the dance floor every struggle (lucha in spanish) is the same and all emotions are shaken to the sound of movement. Because it is so, this is a revolution which is lived and enjoyed.

We have taken this “gozadera” to festivals such as Fusion Festival, Rototom, DGTL, Brunch Electronik, International Dub Gathering, Barcelona’s popular festivities: Sants, Poblesec, Raval and Gothic.
