The Bhadracaryāpraṇidhāna (Tib. Bzang spyod smon lam), i.e., Aspiration for Good Conduct, although so well-known within Mahāyāna Buddhist traditions, still preserves many mysteries. As part of the Gaṇḍavyūhasūtra, it is considered to belong to the time of the historical Buddha, while the earliest datable mentioning of it is 420 CE. When it comes to its Tibetan translation, there are more unknowns than knowns: we cannot establish with certainty who its Tibetan translators were, what was its initial translation version, as well as when and by whom it was revised.

Exploraton of its commentaries leads to even bigger surprise. There are six Indic commentaries currently available as Tibetan translations—five are part of the canonical collections (attributed to Nāgārjuna, Dignāga, Śākyamitra, *Bhadrapaṇa, and Vasubandhu) and one is an anonymous Dunhuang manuscript which may be a commentary attributed to Guṇaprabha in the Tibetan imperial catalogues. The five out of the six commentaries—attributed to Nāgārjuna, Dignāga, *Bhadrapaṇa, and Vasubandhu, as well as the anonymous Dunhuang commentary—are strikingly similar. Their similarity is not just an example of a scholarly tendency of the time; rather they come down to the same (currently unavailable) Sanskrit archetype that reached Tibet in multiple hyparchetypes.

Dr. Maria Vasylieva, RYI’s Assistant Professor, is a Tibetologist, Dharma translator, and interpreter. She is RYI TTP and MA TTIP graduate and holds PhD degrees in Political Science and Buddhist Studies. She has been teaching at RYI since 2018. She has also taught foreign policy and international relations at the Diplomatic Academy of Ukraine and most recently—Sanskrit textual studies as Khyetse Foundation Chair in Buddhist Studies at the International Buddhist College of Thailand. Maria’s academic interests include research and translation of Mahāyāna sūtras and śāstras, in particular comparative textual studies of Dunhuang manuscripts and Tibetan canonical collections. The talk was entitled "The Bhadracaryāpraṇidhāna - a Mahāyāna Masterpiece and a Mystery of Its Commentaries". She spoke with students and participants at RYI on 30th Oct, 2024.
