It’s My Birthday….and I’ll DJ If I want to!
Sprift Soundcast 11 – Gilpin’s Birthday Beats aka Journey by DJ
One of the best things that has come out of the Sprift Soundcast so far is the appreciation shared for such a wide range of musical styles.  
As human beings we become very entrenched in, and passionate about, our musical tastes often preventing us from being open to exploring other genres and experiencing ‘good music’ in whatever form!

Indeed as Alex Somers said to accompany his Balearic Bliss Mixes (Soundcast’s 7&8) - “Music is a minefield of opinion; one man’s poison is another man’s medicine.”

In my early days as a DJ I fought passionately for my sound/scene to be heard and was closed off to appreciating other music – fast forward a few (a-hem) years to my birthday this week and I have very much matured on those views and indeed you’ll hear different genres and influences in my mix for this week’s Soundcast.

Nowadays, I believe that in addition to musical styles, there are also a wide variety of DJ styles.  When playing music to a crowd of people, be it 10 or 10,000 the best DJ’s make a real connection with everyone in the room, feeding off their mood and energy.  Some DJ’s will get the crowd into a groove and keep them on that level throughout their set, almost a ‘trance-like’ state if you will.  My own preference is to take the crowd on a journey - get on their wavelength, provide the beats to get everyone moving as one, nodding, toe-tapping, arm-waving, all-of-the-above before building to a ‘hands-in-the-air’ crescendo….and then repeat.  Earning people’s trust to take them on that journey is the greatest privilege of the DJ.
