But when the piglet shuffled into the city, what greeted him was less golden kingdom and more… bachelor hobbit-hole after a long night. A couch sagging with the weight of strangers who had clearly departed this realm without taking their crumbs. Glowsticks lay strewn like the relics of some ancient rave-battle—though whether such revelry ever truly happened, the neighbors remained wisely silent.

The stipend arrived with the reliability of dwarves demanding supper: punctual, impersonal, and entirely devoid of fellowship. The government was kind, in the way a humming vending machine is kind: upright, indifferent, and occasionally willing to cough up crisps if smacked hard enough.

And so, alone he dwelt. No quests were assigned, no relatives to fuss over him, no mentors knocking at the door with staffs and riddles.

The Saltlick stood sentinel by the window. Smaller now—though whether by its shrinking or by his growing, none could say. He licked it not with ceremony but with the weary intimacy of rereading an old love letter. It glowed faintly. Faithfully.

Of The Ritual he remembered nothing, save a dull ache behind the eyes, a twitch in the mirror, and a mysterious fondness for objects that shimmered far too much to be practical.

Thus passed his days:
He watched the glowing scrying-box with the sound muted, as if to keep it from speaking back. He drew up plans as hobbits draw up diets—ambitious, doomed, and quickly abandoned. He smiled into mirrors not to admire, but merely to confirm that he remained.

“A new life,” they said.

It was quiet. It was soft.
And it was utterly terrifying.
