In the end, it was email that broke us all
The reply all apocalypse cut like a rusty knife
Into the putrid guts of an American Dream

It started with a typically asinine spat 
That unfolded on a neighborhood listserve 
In Chevy Chase, MD
Karen from Black Chestnut Lane
Panic posted about teens 
Riding bikes without helmets on her street
Karen wrote in all caps
Savaging absent parents
And punctuating every other sentence 
With an exclamation mark
To top it all off, Karen cc’d on her email
Half a dozen elected officials 
And petty bureaucrats 
Who weren’t part of the listserve 

Reply all apocalypse 
Reply all apocalypse 

Scott from Dundee Drive 
Took it upon himself to denounce 
Karen’s unforgivable breach of email etiquette 
He called her a troll 
And then reminded everyone on the list 
That Karen from Black Chestnut Lane
Had previously taken inconsistent positions
On peanut allergies and the PTA
Scott hit reply all
And cc’d  a dozen more social media
Luminaries for good measure
Now it was on

Reply all apocalypse

Suddenly the thread blew up
Inboxes overflowed 
With cascading recriminations 
Pleas for moderation went unheeded
The email subject line now read
Re re re re re Teens without Helmets
And that’s when Matt from Maple Terrace wanted to write
“Please unsubscribe me from this goddamned list”,
But this Matt was too proper and prim to write an expletive like that --
Instead of “goddamned” he typed in an obscure series of keyboard symbols
To represent the imprecation and convey his righteous rancor
He then hit reply all

Little did Matt from Maple Terrace know
But his obscure series of keystrokes
Unlocked a Trojan Horse buried deep
In the email server’s IMAP architecture
You see back in 1993, a disgruntled employee of AOL
Had written malicious code that when triggered
Would force all emails sent from one AOL address to go to
Every other Harry, Dick and Tom at Dot AOL
The code was perfectly mean and lethal
It could cannibalize every email server it touched
Generations of lazy and stupid Silicon Valley engineers
Laboring in their airless and dreary cubicles
Had mindlessly copied the code
30 years later, the Trojan Horse was everywhere
And now that gaggle of idiots from Chevy Chase MD
Had unleashed its fury

Suddenly, everything went to everyone
For a while the filth gushed forth unfiltered, unrestrained
Email was an unrelenting cesspool of resentment and hate
Eventually people stopped 
People stopped checking
People stopped deleting
People stopped reading
People stopped writing
The oldest and most insidious corner of the internet just died
Email went into oblivion 
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything

Tommy Cowan is currently a PhD student in the Literature, Media, and Culture program at Florida State University. His primary interest is the confluence between literature and esotericism, including how literatures/texts are conceptualized as esoteric ritual, and the reception/transmission of literary esotericism as an intellectual tradition. He received his MA in Religious Studies from University of Amsterdam (2019), graduating Cum Laude. His 2019 master’s thesis centers around spirituality and esotericism in the works of American author William S. Burroughs. He is also an Associate Editor for Correspondences: Journal for the Study of Esotericism.

As this discussion was centered on research updates, we cover a range of topics- but highlighting a few here:  We start with Tommy’s research on Burroughs that grew out of Tommy’s work with Florida State University’s archive complied by Professor Bucher. Just a head’s up – our discussion is mature in nature, so listener discretion is advised, as they say. We cover two of Tommy’s papers- one that deals with sexual hanging as something that Burroughs was trying to read in an esoteric sense; the other deals with the tension between Burroughs’ misogyny and his ‘feminine’ coded texts,  which leads into a related topic of  transgenderism and alchemy, and circling back to sexual metaphors with brief tangents into Wilhelm Reich’s orgone energy and David Lynch’s atomic bomb scene in Twin Peaks: The Return. After all that, we move on to the concept of ‘normative esotericism,’ as Tommy is looking at ways in which esoteric philosophies and thought reinforce hegemonic normative culture. Lastly, Tommy talks about his new research into how animals enter into symbiotic relationships with plant and fungi substances, plus how we can analyze our own relationship to entheogens.
