Skin IV

The title means "Instable balance" in german, and that's what I feel about - the political situation in the U.S. , which are ruled by mad criminals, making friends with Putin, the most dangerous and reckless man in Europe since Hitler... the ignorance of the climate change... the lack of solidarity and cooperation in our societies... the political situation in my own country, which makes it hard (or at least harder) to simply make music. It took several efforts to complete this tune, that is, though, optimistic and uplifting, I think.

Saxomaphone is a dance piece influenced by a variety of clichés normally associated with the saxophone. There are melodic lines
derived from a variety of pop and jazz genres such as Ska, Reggae, and Hard Bop. I’ve taken these clichés and put them in contexts in
which they are not normally heard. One of the aspects of writing a sax quartet I found most interesting was seeing how the actual
timbre of the instrument is dependent upon the musical situation in which it is placed. A saxophonist playing Charlie Parker’s
Ornithology sounds very different from one playing the Paul Creston Saxophone Sonata. I’ve tried to use a variety of these sounds as
essential ingredients. For me, as a composer, notes are actually a small part of the compositional process. The structure, the macro
and micro-rhythms, the mood and, mainly, the overall sound of the instruments are much more important.

Melodic instrumental Jazz/Rock.
After a short introduction played on the organ, the alto sax plays the first tune before a contrasting bridge/riff on baritone sax and synthesizer in unison. The main tune is then played on tenor sax followed by an improvised tenor sax solo.    
Overall an atmospheric melodic piece of jazz/rock.

A recipient of the Rome Prize and the Berlin Prize, Ken Ueno, is a composer/vocalist/sound artist who is currently a Professor at UC Berkeley, where he holds the Jerry and Evelyn Hemmings Chambers Distinguished Professor Chair in Music. Ensembles and performers who have played Ken’s music include Kim Kashkashian and Robyn Schulkowsky, Mayumi Miyata, Teodoro Anzellotti, Aki Takahashi, Wendy Richman, Greg Oakes, BMOP, Alarm Will Sound, Steve Schick and the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, the Nieuw Ensemble, and Frances-Marie Uitti. His music has been performed at such venues as Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, MusikTriennale Köln Festival, the Muziekgebouw, Ars Musica, Warsaw Autumn, Other Minds, the Hopkins Center, Spoleto USA, Steim, and at the Norfolk Music Festival. Ken’s piece for the Hilliard Ensemble, Shiroi Ishi, was featured in their repertoire for over ten years, with performances at such venues as Queen Elizabeth Hall in England, the Vienna Konzerthaus, and was aired on Italian national radio, RAI 3. Another work, Pharmakon, was performed dozens of times nationally by Eighth Blackbird during their 2001-2003 seasons. A portrait concert of Ken’s was featured on MaerzMusik in Berlin in 2011. In 2012, he was a featured artist on Other Minds 17. In 2014, Frances-Mairie Uitti and the Boston Modern Orchestra premiered his concerto for two-bow cello and orchestra, and Guerilla Opera premiered a run of his chamber opera, Gallo, to critical acclaim. He has performed as soloist in his vocal concerto with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project in New York and Boston, the Warsaw Philharmonic, the Lithuanian National Symphony, the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, and with orchestras in North Carolina, Pittsburgh, and California. Ken holds a Ph.D. from Harvard University. A monograph CD of three orchestral concertos was released on the Bmop/sound label. His bio appears in The Grove Dictionary of American Music.

I'm a baritone sax player & composer in a contemporary jazz genre from Cologne, Germany (and play clarinet and flute, and the other saxes as well). All woodwind parts on these tracks are played by me (multitrack rec.), all other instruments by virtousi virtuali (with three or four exceptions). All arrangements and by far most compositions are by me.
I very much appreciate every kind of collaboration.

Vito Palumbo has been writing music since an early age. After studying at the conservatory he graduated with honors from the prestigious Accademia Chigiana in Siena and the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome studying with Azio Corghi. He also obtained a special scholarship personally awarded by Luciano Berio as the best graduate. In 2005 he was awarded the renowned ‘Premio G. Petrassi’ (established by the President of the Italian Republic at the Quirinale, Rome) for his compositional work.

His production in recent years has focused on large symphonic works for large orchestra. The Recorder Concerto was commissioned by Gävle Symfoniorkester and Dan Laurin, for a monographic CD for the Swedish label BIS Records.
On 17 September 2016, he recorded with the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios (Studio 1) his Concerto for Violin and Orchestra (Musikverlag Ries & Erler, Berlin) with Francesco D'Orazio, soloist and Lee Reynolds, conductor. The monographic album was released by Bis Records and received more than 20 “5-star” reviews from the major specialized magazines in the world, and an ICMA nomination.

About the music

Starting with postmodern experiments in the first period, he after focused on some musical theater forms exploring the possibilities of the voice (melologue) researching various ways in the voice emission with the study of phonemes in many works devoted to the musical theater (Butterfly, Cinque di Cuori, Il Catalogo, Sinforosa, La machine de sons, Comuni-Canti, Les Animaux) along with some influences from his teachers (Azio Corghi and Luciano Berio) about this vocal research.
His output in recent years has focused on large symphonic works for the full orchestra. The Violin Concerto, the Clarinet Concerto, the Piano Concerto, the Recorder Concerto, the Double Concerto for Guitar and Marimba, Drops for harp and string orchestra, Fragile for electric guitar and string orchestra and Dark Clouds for orchestra, represent his full research in further possibilities of the orchestral colors and textures, but also in an organic idea of interconnected and interdependent formal moments and gestures, like a network of neural connections. In the last works, the timbre as color leads to a new idea of "sound-light", researched also with the help of electronics mixed with instrumental sounds (Chaconne, for electric violin and electronics) and thanks to a research of extended techniques also open to the orchestral writing. 
To his interest in astronomy, the goal is to research an abstract "core sound" in a unique and large movement (every work is never organized in separate movements), like eternal cosmic energy of which we are but a small circumscribed point.

Ken Walicki is an American composer who is widely recognized and acknowledged for his dramatic, and engaging music, which reflects the times in which we live. Because of his unusual and interesting background, his sound world has evolved into a unique combination of Art, Pop, Jazz, and World music. Walicki‘s influences include Gyorgy Ligeti, the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Public Enemy, and much more. He was one of the first composers to use turntables in his music and the first composer to have turntables and a D.J. as regular members in a standing ensemble. His music has been performed throughout the world by, among others, the Kronos Quartet, ETHEL, the New Century Saxophone Quartet, the Soldier String Quartet, the Divan Consort, and members of the New York Philharmonic, The Los Angeles Symphony, The Los Angeles Chamber Symphony, The Detroit Symphony, The Pacific Symphony, the Istanbul Borusan Orchestra, and the SWR Kaiserslautern Orchestra. He is the composer-in-residence for the new music ensemble The Divan Consort. Walicki has received grants and commissions from a variety of organizations and performing ensembles including the American Composers Forum, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Jerome Foundation, the Kronos Quartet, the Mary Flagler Cary Trust, and Meet the Composer.
Growing up playing guitar in local Detroit garage bands, Walicki decided, at early age, he wanted to dedicate his life to music. His education included a two-year period in Germany as a Fulbright scholar where he studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Helmut Lachenmann, and Rolf Hempel. He was also an active participant in master classes with Aaron Copland, Samuel Barber, and William Schumann. After returning from Germany, he studied with Jere Hutcheson at Michigan State University where he received his Ph.D. Walicki enjoys traveling and finds it to be a fantastic source of inspiration. After
spending a large amount of time in the Middle East and the Indian Subcontinent, he has found these cultures to be particularly close to his heart. Together these experiences have made him a composer of diverse, accessible, physically, and spiritually moving, yet intellectually rigorous music. In addition to his music being presented in traditional concert music venues such as Lincoln Center in New York and the Liszt Academy in Budapest, his music has also been performed in new music clubs such as CBGB’s, the Knitting Factory, and countless cafes and storefronts throughout the world. Without compromising his values, he has made a point of writing music that relates to people and their situations. Walicki has collaborated with a variety of artists in the classical, pop, theater, film, and dance worlds, including Lydia Lunch, Dora Ohrenstein, the Doug Elkins Dance Company, Emmy winning producer/director Mark Obenhaus, American Opera Projects, Bermuda Triangle, Bang on a Can All-Stars, the Kronos Quartet, Divan Consort, and Ensemble Green. He was the founder and composer of the Ken Valitsky Ensemble, which included Regina Carter and Thomas Chapin as members. Previously, besides being on the faculty at New York University, Walicki has taught composition in Istanbul, Turkey at the Center for Advanced Music Techniques(MIAM), a department of Istanbul Technical University. Currently, he lives in Southern California with his son, and the family dogs.
