I recently swapped a ten-year-old petrol car for a hybrid. Fuel consumption has dropped by a factor of two and there is significantly less exhaust gas coming out of the tailpipe. The car industry is running amok on people like me to make hybrids and full electric vehicles the next car of choice for as many people as possible. However, this will have serious consequences for the environment if combustion engine vehicles are abandoned lightly and the side-effects of electrification are ignored.

The winners solutions will be piloted on the Medicine Hat Grid to help integrate decentralized energy resources such as solar, wind, EVs, batteries and heat pumps. The solutions are a mix of software and hardware designed to use these resources to expand the capacity of the grid, provide cheap energy and better utilize existing underutilized 20th Century grid infrastructure. It's the first step in creating a resilient, affordable and reliable grid of the future.
