This violence can take many forms, including physical, emotional, and psychological abuse, often leaving deep scars that can last a lifetime.

Recent political events have brought a harsh truth to light: some leaders not only ignore but openly support behaviors that violate fundamental human rights. This alarming trend is not merely a reflection of individual attitudes but a systemic issue that permeates political institutions and societal norms. In many cases, these leaders embolden perpetrators by failing to hold them accountable, thereby perpetuating a culture of impunity. One effective approach to addressing these deep-rooted effects, particularly in the case of PTSD, is through the practice of embodiment. This method involves reconnecting with our bodies and their sensations, paving the way for healing and reclaiming a sense of self. In this post, we will explore how to harness embodiment as a healing tool, offering practical steps and valuable insights.

Understanding PTSD and its Effects

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can manifest after experiencing a traumatic event. Symptoms include flashbacks, intense anxiety, nightmares, and persistent thoughts about the incident. In fact, studies show that about 7-8% of the population will experience PTSD at some point in their lives. 

Not only does PTSD affect mental health, but it also alters how individuals interact with their bodies and emotions. Emotional dysregulation is common and can lead to a significant sense of disconnection from oneself. This disconnection frequently translates into physical symptoms such as chronic pain, muscle tension, or fatigue. Recognizing the relationship between trauma, emotional response, and physical manifestation is critical in effectively addressing PTSD.

What is Embodiment?

Embodiment refers to engaging with the body on a sensory level, enhancing awareness of bodily sensations in a profound and meaningful way. This approach encourages individuals to experience feelings in real time instead of suppressing or ignoring them, promoting a holistic understanding of oneself that integrates both mind and body. By focusing on the sensations that arise within the body—such as tension, warmth, or even emotional responses—individuals can foster a deeper connection with their physical selves. This mindful engagement with bodily sensations can lead to increased self-awareness, allowing individuals to recognize and process their emotions more effectively. Techniques such as mindful breathing, body scanning, and movement practices like yoga or tai chi can serve as gateways to this heightened state of awareness, enabling individuals to tune into their physical experiences and cultivate a greater appreciation for their bodies.

Embodiment stands in stark contrast to dissociation, a psychological mechanism that is often a common reaction to trauma. Missing the innocent girl I was
Miss the trusting girl I was
I miss the girl who chased her dream to serve
her country
Thinking that the six guys and chain of command had
killed her,
Just go through the motions
Afraid to trust
Afraid to feel
Dissociate because that is what she was taught
Sometimes I have thought, “why did you not fight them and make them kill you, why did you just lay there, why did you not jump when you had the chance”
Sometimes I have wanted to get rid of this body, to hide this body
so that men would not look at me or hurt me again
But the belief it happened because of what I was wearing and that
I was too drunk came from society, not me.

It is time to unlearn everything that society has taught me,
Time to learn to feel, to stay present, to cry, to be angry, to laugh, to sing,
to dance, to dream, to tell my truth.
I am learning every day that there are more threads to me
That I have been rising and changing, rediscovering who I am
becoming who I want to be

Betrayal at 11 Years old

Waves, a poem I wrote while I was serving in the US Navy. I wrote this while I was on deployment in 2006. It talks about what happened to me. This song talks about my chain of command. This song talks about the victim blaming/shaming, emotional abuse and retaliation that I went through. There is no place for rape in the US military or in society. It's beyond time that this stop.
