Há 9 anos, rompia a barragem do Fundão, localizada no subdistrito de Bento Rodrigues, a 35 quilômetros do centro de Mariana. A tragédia é a maior catástrofe ambiental da história do país, e ficou marcada como o maior rompimento do mundo envolvendo barragens de rejeitos de mineração. 

Cerca de 40 milhões de metros cúbicos de rejeitos de mineração destruíram comunidades e modos de sobrevivência, contaminaram o Rio Doce e afluentes, e chegaram ao Oceano Atlântico, pelo Espírito Santo. Ao todo, 49 municípios foram atingidos, direta ou indiretamente, e 19 pessoas morreram. Em 21 de outubro de 2024, teve início um julgamento em Londres, no Reino Unido, da empresa anglo-australiana BHP Billiton, uma das acionistas da Samarco, junto à Vale. 

Quatro dias depois do início do julgamento, foi assinado, no Brasil, um novo acordo para a reparação dos danos causados pelo rompimento da barragem de Fundão, no valor de R$ 170 bilhões de reais, entre  Samarco, Vale e BHP e o poder público brasileiro. Apesar das novas movimentações, ao longo de quase uma década, nenhum dos 26 acusados foi punido, e 15 réus já foram considerados inocentes. 

Os desdobramentos do rompimento da barragem, em Mariana, foram tema de entrevista, no programa Conexões desta terça-feira, 5 de novembro de 2024, com a professora da UFMG Andrea Zhouri, fundadora do Grupo de Estudos em Temáticas Ambientais (Gesta) da UFMG.
