2024.10.06 Sunday Morning Sermon. 'Lion Of Judah, Root Of David' Revelation 5. 1 To 14

The Whole Message: Faithful Witness in the Face of Opposition
What does it look like to stay faithful when faithfulness is costly? This message from Acts 5:12-42 explores how the early apostles responded when human authority demanded they stop preaching about Jesus. After being miraculously freed from prison, they returned to proclaim the complete gospel—not just the comfortable parts, but the full message of Christ's suffering, resurrection, glory, and the call to repentance.

When ordered to stop speaking in Jesus' name, Peter and the apostles declared: "We must obey God rather than men." Even after being flogged and publicly humiliated, they rejoiced at being counted worthy to suffer for His name. Their response reveals a transformed perspective: suffering for Christ isn't a burden to endure but a privilege to embrace.

This sermon challenges modern believers to examine where cultural pressure, workplace expectations, or fear of rejection may be silencing our witness. Are we proclaiming the whole gospel, or softening it to avoid offense? The apostles teach us that obedience to God isn't contingent on the cost being low—it's a matter of recognizing that Jesus is worth whatever faithfulness requires.

The Whole Message - Acts 5:12-42 - 10.19.2025

When Stephen stood before the Sanhedrin, he didn't defend himself—he proclaimed Christ. In "The Fruit of Devotion" from Acts 6:8-8:4, we discover that Stephen wasn't exceptional because he died for his faith, but because he understood what every Christian is called to be: a faithful witness regardless of the cost.

The word "martyr" comes from the Greek word "martus," which simply means witness. When Jesus told His disciples "you will be my witnesses" in Acts 1:8, He literally said "you will be my martyrs." Stephen grasped this calling completely. While being falsely accused of blasphemy, he delivered a masterful sermon recounting Israel's history of rejecting God's messengers, culminating in their rejection of Jesus, the Righteous One. His boldness came not from personal courage but from being filled with the Holy Spirit.

What's remarkable about Stephen's story isn't just his individual faithfulness—it's what happened next. When persecution exploded against the church and believers scattered throughout Judea and Samaria, they didn't hide in fear. Instead, "those who had been scattered went about preaching the word." Stephen's witness multiplied into countless witnesses. His death wasn't the end of the testimony; it was gasoline on the fire of evangelism.
This message challenges our modern tendency to create a comfortable Christianity that never faces opposition. As the sermon points out, "The version of Christianity that we preach could never be persecuted, because who persecutes someone who just goes into the world and smiles at everybody?" Yet statistics show that less than half of Christians have shared the gospel with a non-Christian in the past six months, despite having freedoms the early church never enjoyed.

The calling remains unchanged: every believer is called to be a witness, a "martyr" in the biblical sense—not necessarily dying for faith, but willing to bear testimony to Christ regardless of the cost. Stephen knew something we often forget: God uses our faithfulness for His glory, even when that faithfulness is costly. The fruit of true devotion isn't comfort or safety, but a church full of bold witnesses who continue the mission despite opposition.

The Fruit of Devotion - Acts 6.8-8.4 - 11.2.2025

What happens when the gospel crosses cultural barriers that seem impossible to overcome? In Acts 8:5-24, we witness Philip stepping into Samaria—a region Jews actively avoided due to centuries of hostility—and proclaiming Christ with boldness. This wasn't just a geographical move; it was a radical act of obedience that shattered deep-seated prejudices and demonstrated the universal reach of the gospel.

As Philip preaches about the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, we see God work in miraculous power. Demons are cast out, people are healed, and an entire city erupts in rejoicing. But the story takes an unexpected turn when Simon, a man formerly known as "the great power of God" for his magic arts, believes and is baptized—only to reveal that his heart isn't truly right before God.

Simon's attempt to purchase the power of the Holy Spirit with money exposes a dangerous misunderstanding of the gospel. Peter's sharp rebuke—"May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money"—reminds us that salvation cannot be earned, manipulated, or bought. It has already been purchased by something far more precious than silver or gold: the blood of Christ.

This sermon challenges us on two fronts: First, are we willing to cross barriers with the gospel? Are there people in our lives we complain about rather than evangelize? Second, are we treating God's gift transactionally—as if religious activity could earn His favor—or are we receiving salvation with empty hands, offering only praise and thanksgiving?

The early church didn't wait for persecution to drive them across cultural lines. They went boldly, empowered by the Holy Spirit, proclaiming Christ to people who were once considered enemies. Their example calls us to examine our own hearts and ask whether we're crossing barriers or hiding behind them.

The Gift of God - Acts 8.5-24 - 11.9.2025

What happens when ordinary people become vessels for extraordinary power? In Acts 9:32-43, we witness Peter's healing ministry in action—not as a display of personal ability, but as a demonstration of Christ working through His church.

Evangelist Eric Love walks us through two remarkable miracles: the healing of Aeneas, a man paralyzed and bedridden for eight years, and the raising of Tabitha (Dorcas) from the dead. These weren't magic tricks performed behind closed doors. These were immediate, undeniable acts of divine power witnessed by entire communities—and they had a singular purpose.

The healing of Aeneas reveals something crucial about how the apostles operated. Peter didn't pray extensively or work himself into a frenzy of faith. He simply declared, "Jesus Christ heals you." But this wasn't presumption—it was prompted obedience. As Eric explains, the apostles weren't walking around declaring healing on anyone they encountered. They moved when the Holy Spirit moved, and they always pointed the credit back to Christ.

When Tabitha died, the church in Joppa knew where to turn. Word of Peter's ministry had spread, and they sent for him urgently. After prayer, Peter commanded Tabitha to arise—and she did. The result? "Many believed in the Lord."

This is the pattern throughout Acts: miracles served the mission. Signs and wonders testified to the truth of the gospel message.

But here's the application that hits home: every conversion is a miracle. When we share the gospel, we're not relying on our eloquence, our arguments, or our persuasive abilities. Paul himself admitted he came "in weakness and in fear and in much trembling." Yet people were saved—because God's power was at work.

Eric challenges us to relinquish confidence in ourselves and place it entirely in Christ. As we witness to family, coworkers, and neighbors, we can trust that Jesus is pursuing every person we speak to. He died for the whole world—He desperately wants them saved.
