Bittersweet Symphony

The classic new year's anthem performed the world over at new year or Hogmanay in Scotland. Solo piano and reflective. Ideal for scenes linked to the new year, looking back over the old year, looking forward to the new. Scenes linked to new year parties, but particularly during poignant moments.

In this edition of Slow Radio, we tumble inside the delicate mechanism of the clock - our attempt to contain and mark the steady rush of time itself. Musical and rhythmic, this surreal audio composition moves between the meditative beat of a single timepiece through to a cacophonous eruption of melodious chimes and cuckoos. The Clock will air just after Big Ben's midnight chimes play out on the BBC, 100 years after London's most famous clock was first broadcast on New Year's Eve 1923.

Featuring audio first recorded for the documentary Time Flies on BBC Radio 4, as well as new recordings and compositions built from the sounds of Big Ben's internal mechanism and ringing bells.

Slow Radio: The Clock

A long time ago, CheapShow was sent an unusual 7” vinyl record called The Sounds of London. The record contained an audio snapshot of the sounds of Britain’s capital in 1967. It’s a fascinating collage of iconic sounds and environmental background noises, offering a unique peek into the past. Rather than talk it about it on a Silverman’s Platter segment, Paul & Eli decided to go out into the centre of London to try and recreate it instead! This week, they’ll race around with their portable recording kit and try and collect as many modern takes of the original vinyl as possible. The Cheap Chaps will zip from Trafalgar Square, to Waterloo, back to Piccadilly Circus and on towards Fleet Street grabbing all the sounds they can! Will they be magnificently successful or will they completely cock it up? It’s a walkabout adventure that takes in bird dirt, arguments with elevators, a lucky break with the bells of St. Clements and a grotty plan to abuse a street performer! It’s the Sounds of London 2024 in the only way CheapShow knows how.

Believe it or not, this episode's been a long time coming for us. We've talked about covering this movie since the beginning of the pod, but we finally sat down to review HOUSE (1985)! This film from director Steve Miner and writers Fred Dekker and Ethan Wiley has been a favorite of our host Nick for many, many years, and it was a delight to finally discuss it on the show. Although this review is not without its cost, as Nick has to endure far more comic talk than he could have possibly anticipated before we hit "record." But we had a blast chatting about the movie, taboo tooth-brushing techniques, Herculean efforts to unearth four eighties comic books, introducing the K.R.E.O.N. certification system and much more. We really hope everyone enjoys the review.

In the vast expanse of the cosmos, Earth, a tiny blue planet on the outskirts of the Milky Way, lies silent, its cities in ruins, its people long gone. As a time traveller and musician, I am drawn to this world, to the echoes of a civilisation that reached for the stars but fell short, consumed by an ambition they could neither control nor fully understand.
Through my music, I seek to capture the essence of this lost era, particularly the turbulent times around 2070, when humanity's fate hung in the balance. Each song is a journey through time, a sonic exploration of the apocalyptic moments when everything changed, guided by the haunting melodies and atmospheric soundscapes that paint a vivid picture of a world on the brink of collapse.
As I wander through the abandoned streets and desolate landscapes, I find inspiration in the remnants of human culture - the unfinished symphonies in empty concert halls, the silence that hangs heavy in recording studios where hit songs were once crafted. The music becomes a conduit for the stories that linger in these spaces, tales of dreams pursued and hopes shattered.
In the rhythms of nature reclaiming the cities, I hear a powerful message - that all things must pass, that even the grandest of human achievements are impermanent. This truth resonates through my compositions, serving as a reminder of our own fragility and the need for humility in the face of the universe's vast mysteries.
Each track  is a warning, a cautionary tale wrapped in sound and emotion. They speak of the paths we may tread if we are not vigilant, the dreams that may crumble if we are not wise. Through music, I forge a connection that transcends time and space, inviting listeners to explore the echoes of a vanished world and heed the lessons hidden within.
Join me on this sonic odyssey through the remnants of Earth's final days, a journey that will leave you questioning our place in the cosmos and the legacy we leave behind. Let the music be your guide as we navigate the ruins of a civilisation that dared to dream big but ultimately succumbed to its own hubris - a fate we must strive to avoid as we venture forth into the unknown.
