I feel like suburban office parks are often disliked and increasingly vacant, but I love them and wanted to write a song about it

Office Park

"Valentina" was born from a challenge to write a narrative song (i.e., a song that tells a story). This was a challenge I relished, since I've never written a story song before. 

It all started with the opening rhyming couplet: "Her name was Valentina - she was a ballerina." About a half-hour or so later, I'd had enough of the first draft of the lyric, and the story was pretty much fully-formed. 

Over the following week or so, I just massaged the lyric.

Musically, the rhythm of the opening rhyming couplet set the template. The universe was also very generous in giving me the melody pretty much complete, needing only some bit of effort to write the bridge.

I am so proud and happy with this song. As soon as I finished writing and rewriting and editing the lyric, I felt that this is definitely one of my favorite songs I've ever written.

"Broken" was written in the late summer/early fall of 2023. 

Thematically, it's about two people, two sides of a relationship that never was, about how trauma breaks people and leaves them unable to connect with each other.

Looking at it now, it's definitely one of my favorite songs I've written so far.

*This version is my first attempt at adding the vocal part to the demo.

I redid the vocals and have experimented with Melodyne (and added a bit of a surprise - listen for it during the third pre-chorus). This version is also remastered.

"Sleeping Soundly" is the "sequel" to "Valentina," with the POV shifting to Valentina's jealous man.

This is a project to fulfill a songwriting prompt, to write a "list" song.

This form of the song is prior to any revisions. It's just two guitars, bass, and vocals at this point.

Everything You Are (T3M2) (Noon 04 - 12 - 2024)

It's not often when I receive an optimistic song from the universe.

"This Time" is one of those. 

I was quite obsessed about getting this one all done. The first element that came to me was the melodic intro (this song was actually born from a prompt in a songwriting group to write a song with a melodic intro that plays at least twice in the song); most of the melody and the chord progression followed quickly. A few days later I managed to write a lyric that fit.

It's absolutely true that I had some late nights just thinking and obsessing about this song. But I'm so glad that I did, because this is one of those few songs that I've written so far for which I feel so much pride and gratitude to the universe.

This Time

"Thought You'd Like To Know" was completed in early May 2024.

It was written to a prompt issued in the How to Write Songs community, where participants were instructed to use six different rhyme pairs in a song. 

While the song is undoubtedly dark and melancholic and heavy, it was fun writing and recording this one.

Thought You'd Like To Know

"Breathe" used to be titled "Dyspnea," which is defined as an uncomfortable shortness of breathe or a hunger for air. The whole point of the song is to try to describe the sensation one might feel when someone they want or need just isn't available.

I'm not 100% happy with this, something I'm reminded of with each subsequent listen of this song. I will likely re-record it in the coming days.

This version of "This Time" is the latest and the closest to "release-ready" so far. We're inching along towards that goal, but we are getting closer and closer.
