The Blackbird

march finds myself trying for a stable mental state. there’s so much going on in the world that it’s often hard to keep the negative thoughts at bay. with that being said, there are still plenty of good things to look forward to, friends to visit and music to experience.

Got up at 4.13am.  Left for Ballinvally woods at 5.06am, arrived there at 5.36am.  It was a calm cool dry morning partly clear with a full moon.  The birds were in really great form, I should have brought another recording rig, so to leave it by the stream to get the chorus with the omni mics next to gentle sound of water, while I recorded nearby with the long gun mic.  Quite a few jets went over, however I got some fairly good stretches of quiet in-between.  The Blackbirds and Song Thrushes sang well, while in the nearby garden I got close to a Chaffinch in song.  Just before leaving for home I recorded a Dunnock in song, he was pointing away from the mic, but it seems that I hadn't pressed record, don't know why.  Left for home at 7.22am, got back at 7.54am.   Recording 4400.

A cabinetmaker by trade.  I have been recording birds for over 41 years.  Even as a seven year old I loved to hear the sound of birds. 
I believe that birdsong is a perfect reflection of the natural environment and yet a part of the experience of the environment.  
Over the years I have made some wildlife films and videos.  For wildlife recording I have been around Ireland, Wales, Finland, Estonia, Sweden, Belize, Guyana, Brazil, Peru and Costa Rica.
