Today, we get all up in our fascia and how it shapes overall health with licensed Occupational Therapist Nyle MacFarlane, founder of Blue Nyle Therapy in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Nyle has over 2 decades of experience in the field of somatics, a field of study that focuses on the body's internal physical experiences and perceptions, and how it relates to movement and bodywork. 

Nyle's training includes myofascial release, visceral manipulation, core synchronism, the Gillespie Approach, sensory integration, neural desensitization integration treatment, pelvic floor therapy, and somatic psychedelic facilitation.  

They are the creator of the Psyche-Soma Integration Model (PSIM), an integrative approach for resolving complex trauma that gets stuck in the body. They teach therapists and practitioners how to use the PSIM to help clients tap into their unresolved trauma patterns.    

Nyle is also a frequent guest on A Mindfulness Experience, our free weekly online gathering that engages healthcare consumers in evidence-based Integrative Medicine approaches to promote better health.

Today, we're opening the vaults to share a rare and remarkable recording from Esalen’s rich historical archive: a 1967 lecture and live demonstration by none other than Dr. Ida Rolf, the pioneering founder of Structural Integration—more commonly known today as Rolfing.

But what is Rolfing? Often described as intense (and sometimes even painful), Rolfing is a powerful form of bodywork that focuses on the manipulation and realignment of connective tissue—fascia—to promote structural balance and physical freedom. Ida Rolf believed that by methodically reorganizing the body’s structure in gravity, not only could chronic pain and postural issues be resolved, but profound emotional and psychological healing could also occur.

This archival gem features Dr. Rolf in her element—lecturing with intellectual precision, delivering her insights with wit and candor, and guiding a live demo with such vivid specificity that, even without visuals, you feel transported into the room beside her. It’s a masterclass in both bodywork and presence.

A little backstory: Ida Rolf first came to Esalen in the 1960s at the invitation of famed Gestalt therapist Fritz Perls, who would become one of her earliest champions. According to The Upstart Spring, Rolf worked on Perls daily for a week. On the seventh day, during a neck session, he passed out—briefly. When he came to, he recounted a deeply buried trauma: a therapist twisting his neck under anesthesia decades earlier. The memory, and its accompanying tension, had haunted him for years. He credited Rolf’s work with helping to release it.

After that, Perls became an ardent supporter of Rolfing, and Ida returned to Esalen again and again. Esalen Institute would become the West Coast hub for her method, just as it had for Gestalt therapy.

This episode is a rare opportunity to hear Dr. Rolf in her own voice, offering not just a window into the origins of Rolfing, but a taste of the charisma, intellect, and force of will that helped her change the way we think about the body, healing, and human potential.

Breathwork guidance and instruction

This breathwork session is for everyone — no experience needed. But we do note that if you are pregnant, have a history of epilepsy or seizures, or have significant heart or cardiovascular conditions, this practice may not be suitable for you. If you’re unsure whether this is safe for your body or health, please check with your physician before practicing.

This is a connected breathing practice, meaning your breath flows continuously with no pauses between inhale and exhale. Let your belly and chest gently rise on the inhale and soften on the exhale. If your body feels like moving or swaying, allow it.

You may breathe in through the nose or mouth and exhale through the mouth. Mouth breathing is more activating; nose breathing is more gentle. Choose what feels right for you.

Each session moves through a few cycles of active breathing followed by breath holds. After each round of breathing, you’ll hold your breath first after an exhale. We rest in this moment. Then we do this again after a full inhale (without exhale), we rest again. And then we continue the next round of breathing. 

Take these holds gently — explore your edges, but never force. Always listen to your body. It’s normal to feel tingling, warmth, coolness, or emotional shifts. These sensations are part of the process. Keep a blanket nearby if you tend to get cold.

If at any point it feels too intense, simply return to your natural breath in and out through the nose. You are always in control.

Practice sitting or lying down somewhere comfortable where you are safe and won’t be disturbed. Headphones are recommended.
