While holidaying in Botswana, I encountered a herd boy seated beneath a wind-bent acacia, coaxing shimmering patterns from a kalimba balanced in his palms. The sound was elemental—bright, cyclical, and hypnotic. 
That moment became the seed of African Thumb Piano Elegy, a solo piano composition that begins with a lilting motif echoing the kalimba’s bell-like resonance and rhythmic repetition. The opening theme is spare and meditative, built on interlocking phrases that mimic thumb strokes and evoke the quiet dignity of that boy’s playing.
But the piece doesn’t stay there.
As the composition unfolds, the kalimba-inspired pattern begins to shift—first subtly, then with growing momentum—as the thumb piano’s circular logic gives way to the forward drive of American piano boogie.
The transition is deliberate: a journey across continents and centuries, tracing the rhythmic DNA that links African folk traditions to the pulse of jazz. African Thumb Piano Elegy is a story told in sound, a musical migration from the veld to the juke joints of the Mississippi. The rhythmic roots remain: repetition, propulsion, even trance, but the context evolves.
