As I was walking through forest pathways in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico, my mind turned to review some of my recent studies. Here's the story as it came to my mind." Back in 1955, before March 22, I was on the verge of entering the world, transitioning from the womb to the free community of life. The mysteries of the human body fascinated me even then, as I prepared to explore the intricate systems that would soon keep me alive and thriving. On arrival, I encountered my first teacher: the neuromuscular junction. Here, acetylcholine whispered its commands to nicotinic receptors, telling my tiny muscles to contract and move. These ionotropic nicotinic receptors, quick and decisive, let sodium and calcium ions flood in, making the magic of motion possible. As I grew, I became curious about the quieter muscarinic receptors, found deeper in the parasympathetic systems. These receptors worked slower, with subtypes each playing distinct roles:   M1, the scholar of cognition, lived in the CNS.   M2, a gentle caretaker, slowed the heart to keep it steady.   M3, the engineer, promoted secretion and smooth muscle movement.   M4 and M5, elusive and enigmatic, remained mysteries in the CNS.   One day, I met myasthenia gravis, a shadowy figure who threatened the nicotinic receptors, weakening muscles with autoimmune force. I learned that acetylcholinesterase inhibitors could combat this foe, giving acetylcholine a chance to act. As I explored further, I stumbled upon the great pathways of dopamine:   The mesolimbic pathway, a highway of reward and pleasure, connected the ventral tegmental area to the nucleus accumbens. Overactivity here could lead to addiction or schizophrenia.   The mesocortical pathway, overseeing cognition and planning, revealed its vulnerability in schizophrenia.   The nigrostriatal pathway, the guardian of voluntary movement, warned me of Parkinson’s disease if its neurons decayed.   The tuberoinfundibular pathway, a quiet regulator of prolactin, explained how dopamine antagonists could disrupt hormonal balance.   Not far away, I found serotonin’s family of receptors, each with unique talents:   5-HT1, a calming presence, reduced anxiety and migraines.   5-HT2, the artist of mood and perception, was targeted by antipsychotics and hallucinogens.   5-HT3, the gatekeeper of nausea, found its nemesis in ondansetron.   5-HT4 through 7, innovators of gastrointestinal health, memory, and rhythms, remained under study for cognitive enhancement.   My journey continued to the lands of norepinephrine:   Alpha-1 receptors stood tall, raising blood pressure with vasoconstriction.   Alpha-2 receptors reined in norepinephrine, calming the sympathetic surge.   The beta-adrenergic trio balanced heart rate, muscle relaxation, and fat breakdown, keeping my body efficient.
