This week’s episode is the fourth in a multipart series called Climate Hits Home, in which guests discuss the effects of climate change on cities and towns in the United States and how local communities are addressing those effects. In this episode, host Kristin Hayes talks with Lisa LaRocque, sustainability officer for the city of Las Cruces in New Mexico, about how urban infrastructure can intensify heat. LaRocque discusses the ways in which climate change affects temperatures in urban areas, how extreme heat disproportionately impacts certain communities, and the methods applied by Las Cruces and other jurisdictions to mitigate the risks of urban heat islands.

"We've got a 330 trillion dollar industry here, which arguably a lot of it, we talk about stranded assets, CRREM pathways to stranded assets, et cetera. I talked to a lot of funds. I've talked to a lot of developers. They're getting very worried about this. And it's not just about their existing portfolios. It's about how they are going to exit portfolios. Because many buyers now actually build in the cost of retrofitting a building to bring it up to sustainability when they're looking at acquiring an asset. So, that might bring the price down. So, for us, we look at everything you've just mentioned. We look at materials. We look at hardware. We look at software and anything that gets us to some of these impact targets we want to achieve in the built environment and also is something which is commercially viable and fixes some particular pain point within this ecosystem." - Alexander Bent 

Fresh out of the studio, Alexander Bent, founder and managing partner from Undivided Ventures, joined us in a conversation on why this is the time to invest in sustainability within the built environment. Alexander started with his background as a real estate developer and the inspiration behind starting his venture capital firm. Undivided VC & Investing in the Built Environment & Sustainability with Alexander Bent

In this week’s episode, host Margaret Walls talks with Carlos Martín, a project director at the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University and a university fellow at Resources for the Future, about housing adaptation and resilience amid climate change, using as a primary example New Orleans housing infrastructure after Hurricane Katrina. Martín argues that the resilience of housing infrastructure is key to climate adaptation, particularly for economically disadvantaged communities. He also discusses how residential buildings produce emissions and contribute to climate change; achieving US decarbonization goals will require related upgrades and improvements, which not all households can tackle with ease.

Our Homes and Our Climate, with Carlos Martín

This episode, we talk to Susan Thompson (Professor at the School of Built Environment UNSW) about her research on urban planning and healthy built environments. We talk about how our cities can make us healthier in our bodies and our minds, and why we should create environments that support physical activity, social connection, and access to healthy food.
