Episode #3 (Season 2): South Africa → AUSTRIA presents the workshop Thinking through Cacophony: An Experiment in Sounding Our Different Knowledges with Thabang Monoa. This workshop aimed to reflect on how disparate knowledge systems and perspectives can come into contact with one another through cacophony and generate new insights and alternative interpretations of how to inhabit the world.

The recordings for this episode were produced on June 3, 2024 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, as part of the research exchange with South Africa, from June 3 to 8, 2024.

Hello and welcome to another Monday!  Time for another Rethink, Remake, Remix of an earlier Interbay track that was posted to Facebook, before Interbay tracks started dropping EVERY SINGLE DAY (so far!) here on Soundcloud.  These tracks all came out from January 2023 through May 2024.  And, what I've done is...I've given them a rethink, I've used my (hopefully) increased music production skills to remake it, and, if all else fails, a good remix will do nicely!  

Sometimes these songs are radically transformed through the RRR process--but today is not one of those times.  "I Surround You" was known as Experiment 110 when posted on the Interbay music project Facebook page (where you can still see nearly all of the 140 tracks posted there, 130 songs and 10 alternate versions, in the Reels tab.  That was the the thing with the Interbay experiments posted to Facebook, each one had their own music video (granted, some involved more effort than others).  

I think you'd find that "I Surround You" and "Experiment 110" are very similar.  I did not do a lot in the RRR process--there's an over all remix, a few sounds and effects were changed, one brand new keyboard was added...that's about it.  

Oh...I did make it louder.  To the point of almost being silly--it is so overdriven, it's like you're right there on a cold Wisconsin winter night in a heating company's warehouse in 1986...where everybody's got their amps turned all the way up as they try to find their sound in all of the noise.  

Like The Jesus and Mary Chain, "I Surround You" dares you to sift through the chaos to find the sweetness buried under the noise.  Get lost in the seemly random and fractal-like nature of the distortion and find beauty there.  

Or, if you're like me, masochistically listen the the pounding and throbbing and the sharp shards of broken glass that might once have been electric guitar chords, while curled up under a blanket on your couch, because you've been sick since Thursday night...and you may be expressing your unwell feelings in your creative pursuits.  

(Hopefully not the last one!  I'll be fine--a bit phegmatic at the moment, but I'm pretty sure this isn't serious, just annoying.  I've managed to generally avoid being sick for years now.)  

I'm not going to predict the response to this latest Interbay track.  I know there are fans of shoegaze here on SoundCloud, but I'm not certain that they are listening to Interbay.  Fans of the synth-based Interbay stuff, though there are a few synths on here, may be confused why this droning noise thing is coming from the same account that dropped "Last Goodbye" yesterday--that's fair.  

But, I've predicted doom in the past and been astonished when a track finds an audience I didn't know it was there (just as often, I'd been confident that I'd made something that people would really like, only to watch it fall completely on its face.)  

So, I'll just hope that as many people as possible (starting with you!) listen to this track, give it a like if you do, repost it, share it, add it to a playlist, leave a comment on it.  Most of all, please follow this page--because there's new Interbay every day!  

PS--There is a part in this song where either my laptop or one of the plugins I was using just...gives up.  Instead of playing what it was directed to play, the circuits all started to melt and some atonal noise takes over, at least for a little while.  I think it is telling that I didn't notice this until just now...and that I'm not taking this upload down, because...it kind of works with the vibe of the whole thing.
