PART I

When I wrote Ritmo, I reflected on many aspects of my life, but essentially on my ongoing difficulty in controlling my anxiety, which slowly transformed into depression. I also thought about the time I was attending therapy to gain better tools to manage it, and where I learned that routine is an essential element in handling anxiety and depression; however, I didn’t want to extinguish the adventurous flame within me.

During this process, I wanted to define what these feelings of anxiety and depression meant to me, and understand that I cannot deny them, but by accepting them, I could only then control them—it is part of my nature as a human.

In my present, I wanted to express that even after suffering the self-destructive calamities of anxiety and depression, it was okay if I consciously built what I manifested, and I began an internal journey, a discovery through these new routines I had created to rebuild myself.

During my reconstruction, I strengthened my relationship with music; at the same time that I created songs, I felt a great catharsis in channeling these feelings of sadness into music—something tangible through the senses—understanding the importance of some of these emotions that we sometimes label as negative, and their ability to create beautiful things when the perspective from which we see them has changed.

PART II

And I realized that many times asking questions is useless; in life, action is what controls life, and there can be no perfection in movement.
I wanted to add irony in having been born flawed, because we are only imperfect—but within imperfection lies the beauty of existing. We are all unique because of our imperfections; no one is better than anyone, yet we all are.

After dealing so much with negative feelings, mainly toward myself, I realized that the secret to respecting others comes from myself, and with them being my mirror, as at the beginning of the song, I close the circle of seeing myself in you and deciding that the best way to treat you, as I wish to be treated, is with love.

Music has created inexplicable, almost supernatural experiences within me.
But at the same time, I have always tried to delve into my consciousness, and it is during difficult times that I ask myself about life and existence.
We are an ecosystem in a sea of life; this new reality, without the distortion of uncontrolled emotions, pushes me to ask myself more existential questions.

What is my plan? Is my life determined by time I cannot see or control? Is it necessary that, in order to make my way, I must always “sin” in some way?

WHEN THE DRUNKEN ACTOR DRANK THE WAVE

Though dizzy from drink that evening
the actor could still feel 
those dark silent faces watching him
through the glow of the footlights—
waiting
as the classic play approached
its tragic conclusion.

Once again, he felt
the grief building within the audience
and knew

as the tension rose in the drama
that wave of grief would also rise 
and then at the end
break
and sweep over the stage

and once again
he would fight to keep from drowning
in the overwhelming siege of emotion.

He felt such dread.

Sometimes he swore he heard
silent whispers of sadness
in that cascade.
Last night, a woman sighed:
Why can’t I forgive myself?

So in his drunkenness 
our thespian now began to consider the unthinkable:

This story need not end so sadly
he said to himself.

He could turn back the tide tonight
if he dropped the knife.
Instead of repeating those words of death
his character could declare: 
I must go on…I must go on.

In so doing, he could lift everyone
by showing them how resilient
a human being can be—
yes, he could give them hope.

But at the crucial moment
he found he could not loosen 
his grip on the handle of the knife—
some unknown force within
had taken possession of him.

He struggled—he fought
until his whole body shook.

Feeling foolish 
he quickly surrendered then
and once again 
knelt down on the stage

then brought that rubber blade down
then down again, then down
for the final decisive stroke.

And as he crumpled down 
he felt so weak in defeat, so weak
he decided:
Tonight I will not fight—
I will not try to block the flood—
if my heart succumbs, so be it.  

In the next instant, the wave crashed down
and washed down over him
but this time, he did not resist—
no, he remained open
even as the pain surged
through his blood and being.

But the worst soon passed
and as he exhaled all he’d taken in
he felt such bright relief.

Later, backstage
the janitor asked him 
why he both wept and smiled 
as he took his bows
and the actor answered:

“I cried because tonight I fully felt 
  the grief of the audience

“and I smiled with hope
  because I realized:

“despite the tragedy in their lives
  those folk somehow manage to remain standing.
  Tonight, I heard them say:
  We must go on…we must go on.”
