Antarctic Climate Change

A man whistles as he walks to his garden at mid-morning. He finds her neighbor, Ms. Akulia, removing and making heaps of dried plant wastes. 

The man greets Akulia and then asks her why she is heaping the dried plant residues. Akulia replies, saying she wants to burn them before planting crops. The man interrupts her, telling her by burning the plant residues she degrades the soil fertility, deprives it of useful organic nutrition, and pollutes the air and worsens the harsh climatic changes. 

An agricultural expert warns community members against burning plant residues, stressing that plant residues are organic manure to the soil, provide heavy mulches to crops and trees by preventing excessive heat from stunting growth while retaining water for long period. This he says moves the community to a fertile land with green refugee settlement.

In this episode, we have the honor of interviewing the incredible Dr. Richard Alley. Dr. Alley is a distinguished professor of Geosciences at Penn State and a lead author in the Nobel Prize winning UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Dr. Alley's work focuses on documenting the history and predicting the future of glaciers and ice sheets in Greenland, Alaska, and Antarctica. He has authored numerous books and articles and advised government officials on sea level rise and other effects of climate change. In the interview, Dr. Alley discusses his experience working on the UN IPCC, the economics of clean energy, as well as his experience doing research in some of the most remote places on earth.

Laura Clarke has been the CEO of environmental non-profit organisation ClientEarth since September 2022. 

ClientEarth works in more than 60 countries, using the law to “bring about systemic change that protects the Earth”.

It has recently been involved in high-profile climate litigation cases, such as against Brazil’s Devastation Bill, against Shell’s board of directors for “failing to move away from fossil fuels fast enough” and against Cargill for “its failure to adequately deal with its contribution to soy-driven deforestation”. 

Additionally, ClientEarth joined others in successfully taking the UK government to court in 2024, arguing that its climate strategy was “not fit-for-purpose and, therefore, breaches the UK Climate Change Act”. 

Clarke joined the organisation after spending two decades in diplomatic roles across Africa, Asia and Europe, including being British high commissioner to New Zealand, governor of the Pitcairn Islands and high commissioner to Samoa.

Avocado toast captions, rainbow-flagged selfies, tote bags with Che, quinoa debates, book clubs, and rooftop bars — this isn’t just a love story, it’s a whole syllabus of progressive clichés, wrapped up in catchy choruses and tongue-in-cheek rhymes.

🎶 Think carbon-neutral kisses, fair-trade beans, and endless “I support…” declarations that sound less like vows and more like hashtags.

Funny, moving, and just a little too real — “Liberal Love” is the soundtrack of every protest, book club, and Instagram story where irony and sincerity hold hands.

So grab your reusable water bottle, adjust your Coexist bumper sticker, and hit play. Because even love can be performative — but at least it’s catchy.

“I support…” was the only vow they could say.

Long talks about feelings, instead of a fight,
But she found him boring — not toxic, polite.
Still, book clubs and protests kept them strong,
Two NPC hearts chanting every song.

Inclusivity fits us like a glove. 

They composted their love in a mason jar,
Called everything “problematic,” no matter how bizarre.
From quinoa debates to “ally” speeches,

CJSF strives to provide points of view that are rarely expressed in mainstream media. We take pride in being an alternative to mainstream media, offering the public a forum for expressing perspectives that otherwise may not be heard.

CJSF 90.1 FM broadcasts from the Burnaby Mountain campus of Simon Fraser University to most of Greater Vancouver, from Langley to Point Grey and from the North Shore to the US Border. 

As a non-commercial station, CJSF takes pride in being an alternative to mainstream media and offers the public a forum for artists and social issues that otherwise may not receive media attention. This includes music by independent artists from a diverse range of genres and public affairs programming that addresses issues faced by marginalized or disadvantages communities. 

CJSF and all campus/community radio enables the public to create the media they want to hear. They have over 150 volunteers from the SFU and Metro Vancouver community and are always looking for new recruits to come in and make radio. 

H2O Radio is journalism about water. We follow water wherever it leads us and report on what we find. We interview experts— from engineers and scientists to legislators and politicians in order to get the facts. But we also talk to ordinary folks to ask how water issues affect their lives. Why? Because we're all in this together. This is a conversation about water and our collective water future.
