Joti Brar, chair of the Communist party of Great Britain (Marxist-Leninist), introduces our meeting to celebrate the 108th anniversary of the great socialist October Revolution.

This fantastic celebration was hosted by our party and held in Saklatvala Hall, in Southall, on Saturday, the 8th of November 2025.

After a brief introduction the audience stand and sing the Soviet anthem together with Paul Robson in commemoration and tribute both to the October Revolution, the Bolsheviks’ great victory in the Russian Civil War, and this year the 80th anniversary of the heroic sacrifices made both by the people of the Soviet Union and the peoples Republic of China who gave respectively 27 million and 40 million lives to defeat the dark armies of fascism and to whom we owe our very existence in the modern world today.

Glory to the Red Army of the Soviet Union! Glory to the People’s Liberation of the People’s Republic of China!

Comrade Thavone Singharaj, deputy head of mission of the People' Democratic Republic of Laos in the UK, speaks at our celebration of the 108th anniversary of the Great Socialist October Revolution.

Cde Singharaj outlines the long anti-colonial independence struggle of the people of Southeast Asia, who fought united against the French colonists and then agains the mightiest empire the world has seen - the US imperialists, who were determined to re-install French colonialism as a bulwark against communism, and to ensure that the loot from the areas agricultural and mineral reserves, and cheap labour power continued to flow into the coffers of the Anglo_american imoperialists. 

McArthur explained that Burma, Thailand, India, the phillipines and Indonesia were all at stake - and that the people could not possible be left to decide their own fate.

After the colossal scale of the victory of the peasant and working masses against the Anglo-American and French imperialsts, the Lao PDR have patiently built up their country from penury and destruction ,in the case of sanctions and the disaster wrought by decades of chemical and conventional warfare upon their small nation - which left 1000kg of unexploded mu inions for every Laotian man woman and child littered across the nation, and which is still taking a toll on the population today.

None the less this proud and independent socialist nation is building a new life and forging ahead with its own independent and sovereign economic development,

In December the Laos PDR will celebrate its 50th Anniversary. 

Long live the memory of their glorious liberation struggle! Long live the Great Socailsit October Revolution!

Laos anti-imperialism and October

Comrade Zhou Fe, Minster at the Embassy of the People's Republic of China and member of the Chinese Communist Party speaks at our celebration of the Great Socialist October Revolution.

Cde Zhou celebrates the 80th anniversary of the victory over Fascism in the great people's anti-fascist War - in which the Soviet Peoples gave 27 million lives and the Chinese people an incredible 40 million lives to defeat the combined forces of German and Japanese Fascism over a protracted period of struggle that encompassed WW2.

China is Socialist - and the People's Republic of China and the Chinese Communist Party have their origins in and trace their roots to the Great Socialist October Revolution, he says!

The Chinese communist party and the PRC continue to grow the economy by leaps and bounds, transforming the prosperity and the lives of the working people, maintaining and safeguarding their independence and in so doing transforming the world for the greater good of humanity.

We owe a deep debt of gratitude to the heroic sacrifices of the Chinese People and their lasting contribution to building toward a peaceful and stable, sustainable world.

China's great green wall project is responsible for a quarter of global afforestation. China's energy consumption is becoming predominantly based upon green and carbon neutral energy (hydro-electric, photovoltaic, wind and tidal, geothermal and Solar-produced Hydrogen as well as nuclear). China's technological advance is allowing it to break the grip of the monopoly capitalists, in particular the Anglo-American and EU imperialists. China is allowing, via the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, BRICS and the Belt and Road initiative, the whole world a pathway out of financial subjection to the imperialist powers.

Long live the legacy of the Great Socialist October Revolution! Long live the People's Republic of China and the Chinese Communist Party!

The Peoples Republic of China traces its roots to the October Revolution

Her Excellency Comrade Ismara Vargas-Walter, Ambassador for Cuba to the UK and Ireland speaks about the lasting significance of the October Revolution to the people of Cuba. 

It was October 1917 that brought socialism to the world - and Cuba's revolution that brought October into the American hemisphere, the Caribbean and Latin America, and has been a lasting inspiration for the peoples of the Americas striving for freedom from imperialist domination and the US Monroe Doctrine of the Americas being the USA's sphere of imperial domination in particular.

SHe talks about the ongoing effects of the Criminal Blockated - inspiration to strangle the Cuban nation and make er"her people scream" since the 'Cuban Missile Crisis' of 1962 and tightened by Helmes-Burton and. in particular Trump's designation Cuba as a "State sponsor of Terrorism" - that makes it almost impossible for Cuba to trade with the world, and in particular to trade and buy vital equipment, spare parts and medicines.

Yet despite this, while US imperialism exports colour revolutions, missiles, bombs and wars for regime change, whilst leaving its people languishing in poverty, Cuba cares for its people, provides universal education, housing, food, clothing, shelter, social  and medical care, and exports doctors and development aid - as well as the products of its ground breaking science and biotechnology industries.

At this great time of attempted strangulation, the Cuban people need above all solidarity and to return to the roots of their revolutionary struggle for independence.

Maysel Brar, who has worked in the movement under her maidan name of Kathy Sharp, was Harpal's close comrade and companion. He was the editor of the paper of the Indian Workers' Association, and the anti-imperialist workers' journal LALKAR, which can be found here:

Harpal played a role in many of the great liberation struggles of his time, from Zimbabwe and South Africa, Vietnam and Korea, Palestine and the Middle East to the great anti-imperialist cause of Irish reunification and national liberation. And of course he struggled tirelessly to solve the central question of the liberation of the working class from capitalist exploitation and imperialism. 

Harpal wrote extensively on the question of proletarian revolution and womens liberation. Harpal’s criticism of the Labour Party as an imperialist party of Social Democracy is essential reading for all British workers. He wrote on Indian, Zimbabwean, Korean and Vietnamese national liberation, on bourgeois nationalism, black separatism and identity politics. He wrote of course extensively on the great revolutionary movements of the Soviet people and of China, and he wrote on the historical roots of Zionism and imperialism in the Middle East with specific reference to the cause of the Palestinian people for national liberation and self determination. 

Harpal was undoubtedly a great disciple of Marx and Lenin, and recognised that the Great Socialist October Revolution in Russia as a watershed of cultural enlightenment and freedom for Humanity. Harpal’s critique of Trotskyism, his defence of the revolutionary teaching and leadership of Joseph Stalin, and his critique of Khrushchevism and revisionism that caused the downfall of Soviet Socialism is among the lasting theoretical contributions he bequeathed to the communist movement.

We are grateful and moved by all of the tributes from his friends and comrades - that flowed to us even before we could speak to any but our closest comrades and family. To all of Harpal’s comrades and loved ones: we are sorry for your loss too. We are united in our grief. And our determination to carry on his work. Which is all of our work. The Party was Harpal’s wider family in every sense. And remains ours.

If Harpal could say one thing to us it would be: “guard the party as you guard the apple of your eye.” He struggled to found and build it in the most difficult conjunction of circumstances, after the fall of the once mighty USSR. It is a great gift - the best of British - that he leaves us.

Harpal played a role in many of the great liberation struggles of his time, from Zimbabwe and South Africa, Vietnam and Korea, Palestine and the Middle East to the great anti-imperialist cause of Irish reunification and national liberation. And of course he struggled tirelessly to solve the central question of the liberation of the working class from capitalist exploitation and imperialism. 

Harpal wrote extensively on the question of proletarian revolution and womens liberation. Harpal’s criticism of the Labour Party as an imperialist party of Social Democracy is essential reading for all British workers. He wrote on Indian, Zimbabwean, Korean and Vietnamese national liberation, on bourgeois nationalism, black separatism and identity politics. He wrote of course extensively on the great revolutionary movements of the Soviet people and of China, and he wrote on the historical roots of Zionism and imperialism in the Middle East with specific reference to the cause of the Palestinian people for national liberation and self determination. 

Harpal was undoubtedly a great disciple of Marx and Lenin, and recognised that the Great Socialist October Revolution in Russia as a watershed of cultural enlightenment and freedom for Humanity. Harpal’s critique of Trotskyism, his defence of the revolutionary teaching and leadership of Joseph Stalin, and his critique of Khrushchevism and revisionism that caused the downfall of Soviet Socialism is among the lasting theoretical contributions he bequeathed to the communist movement.

We are grateful and moved by all of the tributes from his friends and comrades - that flowed to us even before we could speak to any but our closest comrades and family. To all of Harpal’s comrades and loved ones: we are sorry for your loss too. We are united in our grief. And our determination to carry on his work. Which is all of our work. The Party was Harpal’s wider family in every sense. And remains ours.

If Harpal could say one thing to us it would be: “guard the party as you guard the apple of your eye.” He struggled to found and build it in the most difficult conjunction of circumstances, after the fall of the once mighty USSR. It is a great gift - the best of British - that he leaves us.

Comrade Tushika Ranasinghe of the Janatha Vimukth Peramuna (JVP) delivered a powerful fraternal address honouring the October Revolution and outlining Sri Lanka's recent political transformation. He described the decades of corruption, ethnic divisions, and capitalist decay which culminated in the 2022 Aragalaya uprising. The JVP and its broad front, the NPP seized this historic moment and mobilised workers, women, peasants and the youth to win the presidency and parliamentary majority in 2024.

The U.S is recycling its old ideas again (remember the concocted idea of Operation Norwoods!) in order to attack Venezuela. No longer can it call Maduro an undemocratic dictator as it did through the early 2000s and so it has changed tactics. Maduro is now a drug kingpin and a designated terrorist with a bounty on his head. The US wants to invade Venezuela for its oil and to destroy the example it is presenting to the world that there in fact is a different route from capitalism; that route is called socialism.
