In this episode of Concepts from the Global South, hosts Dr. Alisa Shablovskaia (University of Oslo) and Dr. Alp Eren Topal (Ibn Haldun University, Istanbul) speak with Dr. Mary Elston (Bowdoin College, Brunswick) about the Arabic concept of manhaj in contemporary Egypt.

Drawing on her ethnographic and textual research at al-Azhar, Elston traces the shifting meanings of manhaj—from its classical sense of a “clear path” to its modern usage as “method” or “methodology.” She discusses how manhaj became central to 20th-century debates about colonial modernity, Islamic reform, and nationalism, and how it figures today in the Azhar revival of study circles, the articulation of an “Azhar manhaj,” and contestations with Salafi and Islamist currents.

The conversation explores how manhaj mediates questions of education, authority, and tradition; its role in shaping ethical formation and lived practice at al-Azhar; and its political entanglements in contemporary Egypt. Along the way, Elston reflects on the relationship between manhaj, turath (heritage), and wider global debates about authenticity, modernity, and knowledge.

A conversation with Anastasiia Manuliak, curator and cultural manager, Head of Visual Arts at the Ukrainian Institute in Kyiv, Ukraine, and representative of the Zapravka residency programme. 

She shares how Russia’s full-scale invasion has reshaped Ukraine’s cultural landscape: from new institutions and the increasing public demand for culture, to artists redefining their roles in times of war. From preserving memory through art to interventions on the battlefield, Anastasiia shows how creativity and resistance intertwine.

Speaking from a young artist’s perspective, she stresses that for emerging artists, war is their only reality—their only context. And when it comes to the future, she reminds us how uncertain that word has become: for many, only the present feels certain as the conflict continues.

What assumptions have we inherited that limit the transformative potential of philanthropy? And how can funders release ourselves from the constraints of these limiting beliefs? In this episode, GIA is joined by Mandy Van Deven (Elemental), Zaineb Mohammed (Kataly Foundation), and Erin Williams (Constellations Culture Change Fund and Initiative) to explore some of the narratives that underpin common practices in philanthropy and provide examples of funders that have adopted ways of thinking and being that accelerate progress toward a more just and joyful world.

Building from The Myths of Philanthropy series that was published by the Center for Effective Philanthropy, the Association of Charitable Foundations, and VITA, this conversation challenges cultural funders to imagine what becomes possible when we shift the narrative: from scarcity to abundance, from rigid structure to iterative practice, and from donor darlings to a flourishing ecosystem. Listeners will walk away with bold insights on how narrative strategy isn’t about magic words, messaging, and single stories, and a better understanding of the role funders can play through the application of resource redistribution and other acts of solidarity that enable our collective liberation.
