A200 Sax and Shruti (2024 remix)

I recently rediscovered a cassette recording of a solo performance I presented in April of 1978 during my freshman year at CalArts. The performance took place in A200, a large, resonant dance studio with a high ceiling and wood floor; perhaps the best reverb on campus. (I spent many late nights improvising in that space when it was otherwise quiet and unused.)

During that performance I played a short saxophone improvisation, self-accompanied by a shruti box (bellows-driven drone) that I managed to operate with the heel of my foot while seated on a stool. Hearing this recording with new ears, I was struck by how much it captured my playing at that time and some of the essence of my 19-year-old self.

Forty-six years later, I've remixed the piece, giving the shruti box a more prominent role and repeating the whole improvisation a second time, backwards. Some additional delay is added without diminishing the original resonance of A200.

Rebel Rebel / Let's Dance / Notorious medley (CalArts Creative Rep S24)

"Soy Artista" is a language-based sound art piece (3-channel audio with effects) performed at the Doctor of Musical Arts Performer-Composer Showcase Concert at California Institute of the Arts on October 22, 2024.

The work is documentation of my personal study of the Spanish language expressed through writing and audio-recorded speech about my artistic identity. The original purpose of the project was to connect my efforts to becoming fluent in the Spanish language with critical information about my burgeoning artistic identity. This effort is represented in three voice memos from a 2019 summer journal entry on the theme of what I like the most about my work. Each version of the text & audio highlights strengths and weaknesses within my Spanish writing & speech that are useful for my ongoing personal assessment of my growth in the language.

Character designer and animator studied in CalArts and spent a major time of his career working with Disney Animation Studios, creating the likes of Mushu for Mulan and Iago for Aladdin.

But all these years later, he started his own animation studio Pencilish Animation Studios, the first-ever crowd-invested animation company, which he states can go head to head as an indie studio with the "Big Guns."
