Is a tumour's ability to evolve and adapt over time linked to why it becomes resistant to radiotherapy? And if so, what can we do to overcome this radioresistance?

In this episode, Dr Christopher Jones and Dr Ashley Nicholls from CRUK RadNet Cambridge at the University of Cambridge explore these questions. They explain why some tumours are resistant to radiation and why some patients are more resistant to treatment than others. They also offer insights into why recurrence happens and how to identify it early in order to treat it more effectively with new technologies.

This includes designing new tools to make drug delivery more accurate and new genetic approaches to investigate specific ways to treat cancer in the context of radiation. Chris works predominantly in oesophageal cancer, while Ash studies lung cancer, but both strive to understand why relapse and radioresistance occur to then try to target these cancers with specific drugs or drug combinations to lessen toxicity and help personalise treatment.

BUFFALO, NY – October 20, 2025 – A new #research paper was #published in Volume 16 of Oncotarget on October 16, 2025, titled “Widespread folate receptor expression in pediatric and adolescent solid tumors – opportunity for intraoperative visualization with the novel fluorescent agent pafolacianine.”

In this study, led by first author Ashley C. Dodd from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital and corresponding author Timothy B. Lautz from the same institution and Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, researchers discovered that folate receptor beta (FRβ) is widely expressed in various pediatric and adolescent solid tumors. This finding highlights FRβ as a promising target for improving the accuracy of tumor surgery using a fluorescent imaging agent known as pafolacianine.

Pediatric cancers are often challenging to remove completely during surgery, particularly when tumors spread or form small metastases. Fluorescence-guided surgery is a method that helps surgeons better identify tumors during operations using special imaging dyes. However, commonly used dyes such as indocyanine green are not tumor-specific and rely on general features of blood vessel permeability, limiting their precision.

In this study, researchers investigated the potential of pafolacianine, a next-generation dye that targets folate receptors, for pediatric use. Folate receptors are proteins commonly found on the surface of cancer cells. Pafolacianine is already FDA-approved for adults with ovarian and lung cancers due to its ability to bind these receptors and highlight tumors during surgery. 

The research team analyzed tissue samples from 13 young patients diagnosed with various cancers, including Wilms tumor, osteosarcoma, synovial sarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, Ewing sarcoma, and neuroblastoma. The results showed that FRα was predominantly absent, whereas FRβ was present in 100% of the tumor samples. Notably, FRβ appeared both on the tumor cells and in the surrounding tumor microenvironment but showed little to no expression in normal tissue, making it an excellent candidate for targeted imaging.

“In this study, we performed immunohistochemistry staining on slides obtained from a range of pediatric patients with solid tumors.”

This consistent expression of FRβ in pediatric tumors is a significant and novel finding. Earlier studies primarily linked FRβ to immune cells called tumor-associated macrophages. This study reveals that FRβ is also expressed directly on tumor tissue, which could help surgeons better distinguish cancer from healthy tissue during procedures.

Based on these results, the team has launched a clinical trial to evaluate pafolacianine in children undergoing surgery for metastatic lung tumors. If successful, this method could make pediatric cancer surgery safer and more effective.

Overall, this study suggests that targeting FRβ with pafolacianine could serve as a tumor-agnostic imaging strategy, applicable across a wide range of pediatric solid tumors. This represents a potential advancement in real-time surgical imaging and a step forward in pediatric cancer care.

Toxic Exposure: The Monsanto Roundup Trials, and the Search for Justice," reveals the dark side of the world's most widely used herbicide. Jessica Aldridge interviewed Dr. Chadi Nabhan in 2023, who offered his expert insights on the link between glyphosate and cancer, the landmark legal battles against Monsanto, and the ongoing struggle for environmental justice. For years, Monsanto declared that their product Roundup, the world's most widely used weed killer, was safe. But in 2015, scientific studies concluded that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, is probably carcinogenic. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Monsanto disagreed with the findings, as scientists worked to understand the link between glyphosate and cancer.

Dr. Chadi Nabhan's book, Toxic Exposure [https://chadinabhan.com/mybooks/], tells the true story of his role as an expert physician witness who testified in multiple state and federal trials against Monsanto. His book recounts the heartbreaking stories of numerous patients who developed the cancer non-Hodgkin lymphoma, after regularly using Roundup on yards and school grounds. 

Monsanto is now owned by Bayer, one of the largest agrochemical companies in the world. These companies and the EPA downplayed the health dangers of Roundup and the active ingredient glyphosate even after Monsanto lost numerous court cases (owing billions in judgements) and settled out of court for more than $11 Billion for more than 100K patients. 

In this interview we discuss the history of Roundup, the dangers of glyphosate, the trial stories and verdicts, and what the everyday person can do to fight for justice against this agricultural behemoth. 


Dr. Chadi Nabhan is an expert in lymphoid malignancies and treating and diagnosing cancers. Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare blood cancer that primarily affects older adults. One of the key challenges in diagnosing and treating BPDCN is that it closely resembles other forms of leukemia in both appearance and behavior. This overlap often leads to delays or uncertainty in diagnosis, especially since currently there is no single, reliable marker that clearly distinguishes BPDCN from related diseases.

To address this issue, researchers from the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center investigated the genetic profile of BPDCN.  Their study, titled “Genetic characteristics of blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm: A single institution experience,” was published in Oncotarget (Volume 16).

Genetic Study Identifies Potential Diagnostic Marker for Rare Blood Cancer BPDCN

Nesta quarta-feira, 22 de outubro de 2025, a médica mastologista Débora Balabram, professora do Departamento de Cirurgia da Faculdade de Medicina da UFMG, conversou com o jornalista Hugo Rafael sobre o crescimento preocupante de casos de câncer de mama em mulheres com menos de 40 anos de idade e ações como a campanha Outubro Rosa, que tem o objetivo de alertar as mulheres e a sociedade para a importância da prevenção e do diagnóstico precoce do tumor.

O dia 19 de outubro que, neste ano, caiu no último domingo, é reservado ao Dia Mundial de Combate ao Câncer de Mama. No Brasil, esse é o tipo de tumor que mais mata mulheres no país, segundo dados do Painel Oncologia Brasil. Somente em 2023, mais de 20 mil brasileiras morreram em decorrência da doença. Tradicionalmente mais comum em mulheres acima dos 50 anos, o câncer de mama tem apresentado crescimento preocupante entre mulheres com menos de 40. Ainda de acordo com o Painel Oncologia Brasil, entre 2018 e 2023, mais de 108 mil brasileiras com idade entre 35 e 49 anos foram diagnosticadas com a doença. Como forma de contornar esse crescimento acelerado e conscientizar sobre a importância do diagnóstico precoce, o Ministério da Saúde passou a garantir que mulheres de 40 a 49 anos possam fazer mamografia pelo SUS, mesmo sem que apresentem sinais ou sintomas da doença. 

De acordo com o Instituto Nacional do Câncer (Inca), em 2025, serão diagnosticados mais de 73 mil casos de câncer de mama no Brasil. Embora qualquer mulher e até mesmo homens possam desenvolver câncer de mama, alguns fatores aumentam os riscos, como obesidade após a menopausa, sedentarismo, consumo de álcool e tabagismo.

O número de diagnósticos de câncer entre adultos de 18 a 50 anos no Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) saltou de 45 mil casos em 2013 para mais de 174 mil em 2024, segundo dados do DataSUS. Um aumento de quase 300% em pouco mais de uma década, que acende um alerta sobre o perfil cada vez mais jovem dos pacientes e a sobrecarga nos custos da rede pública. Diante desse cenário, cresce a importância de discutir estratégias de prevenção e diagnóstico precoce — e a genética de precisão surge como uma das ferramentas mais promissoras. A Rádio UFMG Educativa é uma parceria entre a Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG) e a Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC), com transmissão de programação diária na frequência 104,5 FM, para a Região Metropolitana de Belo Horizonte, e on-line, pelo site http://ufmg.br/radio. Inaugurada em 6 de setembro de 2005, a emissora oferece uma programação diferenciada e alternativa aos formatos e gêneros musicais já existentes no mercado. Referência em produção radiofônica entre as rádios universitárias do país, a UFMG Educativa tem a missão de dar visibilidade à produção de conhecimento da Universidade, por meio da comunicação pública da ciência e do fomento à discussão constante de temas relacionados à educação e à cultura. A emissora está vinculada ao Centro de Comunicação da UFMG (Cedecom) e é composta pelos núcleos de Jornalismo, Operações e Programação.
