This month’s Carhartt WIP Radio show explores the soundtrack of PRECIOUS, our latest skate film directed by Paris-based filmmaker Joaquim Bayle.

The score is a journey through LA rap by BONES, New York hardcore by Show Me the Body, and avant-garde folk from Dali Muru & The Polyphonic Swarm.

Carhartt WIP Radio February 2024: PRECIOUS

030/313 – Berlin/Detroit, the fundamental techno union. Now Carhartt WIP, whose roots can be traced to Detroit, Michigan, join forces with Tresor for a collaboration that celebrates the enduring spirit of two music metropolises. Referencing the early 90s compilations like "Tresor II – A Techno Alliance", they present a 12" mini compilation with exclusive material from both cities.  

The compilation opens with "I.D.L.E.", a lost Model 500 track, of essential funk that touches the techno soul of The Motorcity, with trippy melodies and cosmic drilling traversing electrified Mojo freeways. It's followed by another true Detroiter: Ectomorph's "Searching (Live At Globus)", a first extract from their live set at Globus in 2021, which BMG and Erika played on borrowed equipment after Erika's case was lost on a flight. The A-Side stays in Detroit and finishes with "Your Body", an exclusive track by AMX, also known as The AM, one of Detroit's freshest funk techno sensations. She carries on the mentorship mindset by having learned from two of the greatest: D.I.E. and Scan 7. "Your Body" is a classic techno feel swinger, where subtle chords meet drum machine funk in the spirit of early Detroit techno.

DJ Stingray 313 opens the B-Side with a bang. Precisely hacked techno, full of dark funk and that special industrial jack, that the man in the mask has made his own. A total "Dynamic Instability". Magic & furious. The thrill continues with "Metal Goat", by JakoJako, one of Berlin's brightest synth sensations. She provides an introspective grower that slowly evolves into a fast-paced techno grinder, laden with micro shifts and magic twists. The final tune comes from Erik Jabari, a newcomer from the 030 zone, emerging from the Hard Wax peers with haunting modular synth techno – a feverish minimalistic trip of motorized kicks. DJ Pete performed as spiritual guidance on this one. It's floor proven. An overall cachet of "030313" - the small compilation with a huge techno heart.

JakoJako - Metal Goat

DJ 3000, the trailblazing figure in electronic music, unveils "Work In Progress," an electrifying track extracted from his latest album "Mezë." This song is a testament to the essence of Detroit's music scene, where the bassline reigns supreme, and less is indeed more.

 "'Work In Progress' is all about that bassline," explains DJ 3000. "I wanted to capture the raw energy and infectious groove that defines Detroit's sound. The combination of a captivating bassline with a catchy vocal creates an irresistible vibe that's impossible to resist." 

As the track evolved during production, DJ 3000 felt compelled to introduce stabs, adding an extra layer of Detroit funk that elevates the song to new heights. This infusion of elements reflects his deep-rooted love for Carhartt and Carhartt WIP, paying homage to both fashion and music in a seamless blend of urban culture and sonic innovation. 

Joining DJ 3000 on the EP are two Detroit icons, Jon Dixon and DJ Godfather, each offering their unique take on "Work In Progress" through exhilarating remixes. Jon Dixon infuses soulful melodies and driving beats, while DJ Godfather injects his signature energy, resulting in remixes that push the boundaries of sonic exploration. 

In addition to "Work In Progress," the EP features an exclusive unreleased tune titled "Kazani,” showcasing DJ 3000's commitment to delivering fresh and innovative sounds to his audience. 

"Work In Progress" is not just a track; it's a celebration of Detroit's rich musical heritage and DJ 3000's dedication to pushing the boundaries of electronic music.

This month’s show features the Belgian record label and music festival @meakusma, which began in 2004 as a series of events across Brussels and the small eastern Belgium city Eupen, before evolving into a record label in 2008, and a festival in 2016, aiming to celebrate the unclassifiable, through music, installations, and lectures.
 
Since the label’s inception, Meakusma has continued to release a selection of records which defy genre and categorization, from artists such as Madteo, Viola Klein, Tomaga, Charlemagne Palestine, Don’t DJ, Lord Tang, Sam Gendel, or Pretty Sneaky.
 
For this episode of Carhartt WIP Radio, Meakusma’s founders created a sprawling mix exploring the label’s back catalogs, abstract sounds by Roger 23, minimal techno from Detroit’s Terrence Dixon, and twisted electronics by Berlin’s Peter Kock. At midnight, on March 13th 1991, a basement door opened at Leipziger Strasse 126, Berlin. Through this door, many passed, on their way to defining new terrains in electronic music. There they found a dance floor in the vaults of a closed-down department store, with a unique sound bound to dense fog, building night after night a history that was also a vision of the future. 

This history has seen in Jeff Mills’ first sets on three turntables, Underground Resistance's first live appearances in Europe, grandiose Tresor Park parties, to various chapters of the Loveparade with Sven Väth in the 90s and since then countless generation-spanning parties. These moments represent the highlights of infinite personal clubbing experiences. It is the manifestation of the Berlin spirit, emerging from its considerable strife. This history is not without its complications - from temporary closure by the authorities and several raids in the early years to closure and demolition of the old location in 2005. What followed was years of wandering in exile and, finally, resurrection in the new home in Kraftwerk Berlin.

These stories, conversations and shared experiences within our walls forge a resilience that drives towards a shared ideal, the Tresor sound: community, resistance, and the world to come. This was observed in the newly re-unified German youth, who danced and celebrated together from the club’s inception, and into the present day through ongoing community work in Detroit. 

Tresor Records was founded in the same year and began to serve as a platform for exporting the new sounds associated with Tresor all around the world. Emergent musicians from Michigan, such as Juan Atkins, Underground Resistance and Drexciya, were pivotal in shaping these early years. Their visits to Berlin would kick-start dialogue between the youth movement in Europe and these musicians. This story is one of friendship and community-building, inextricably linked with cities like Detroit, Birmingham or Edinburgh, where like-minded friends built something truly special, where revelatory rhythms soundtrack decaying industry in corrupted metropoles. 

Tresor Records has been the fertile soil for dozens upon dozens of creative minds, from the very luminaries of the scene who developed electronic music over the last three decades through to contemporary protagonists who are currently defining the sound of the future -  A more than 300 strong catalogue displays an unmistakable identity - the Tresor spirit.

To those that have danced before, and to those that will dance in the future: the light at the end of the long Tresor tunnel is a signal. A flicker amidst the fog. This is our future. This is our place.
