For the past 2-3 years we have had our Dirtbox surveillance team out watching for any murmurs across the Drum & Bass scene. 

The technology used is so high tech, we were asked by Vin Diesel to borrow it for his Fast X movie.

After scouring every rave and Drum & bass archive we could, eventually a flashing beacon shone across our high tech screens.

We had found exactly what we were looking for A duo with a history of banging out pure dark rollers and party crashing classic Neurofunk.

That duo aptly named Rubio & Javi, otherwise known as the `Maniatics`

No stranger to releasing with only the best labels across our wonderful world of 170 bpm breaks and bass driven mayhem, the boys have produced some absolute classics over recent years on such labels as `High Resistance` `Neurofunk What Else?` and `Dub Elements Music` to name but a few 

Hailing from the beautiful country of Spain, these boys bring the noise and we are overjoyed to have them debut with us on Dirtbox.

“Maniatics- Better Time” 

A heavy and monstrous intro on this one. Peddle to the floor Neurofunk at its best.

An old, what can only be described as 1950s news report brings us to past the intro of this one into a relentless onslaught of drums and bass, No prisoners are taken throughout as we approach the breakdown, waving right back into action in no time. Theres no better time than during this beast of a tune.

We take a slightly different direction on this one, shooting rises throughout the intro and pads rolling into a crunchy roller of a track that uses all its space within the mixdown fluently to bring the heaviest sound possible, Don't fall over.

20 years ago I did a series of studio mixes; 'Technoid', 'Return to Technoid' and '95% Technoid' - the last still available here: https://soundcloud.com/squee/95-technoid-26-12-2003 . These mixes ended up being style defining for me, as it started my focus on the techy sound in DnB. They perfectly capture the music of the first Blackout party by Black Sun Empire in Utrecht, also in 2003. Back then we distinguished between 'Technoid', with techno inspired percussion and heavy leads or melodic stabs, so more the Konflict/C4C/Stakka & Skynet, and 'Neurofunk' being more the style of what the Virus guys were doing. It seems everyone now calls this Neurofunk in retrospect and Technoid is now used for the harder techno/gabber inspired sounds, that were really driven by the OffKey label. This, to me, is really the original Technoid, though.

I gathered all the tracks of the first two mixes and mixed them live, in a two hour show. The original recordings aren't great quality so it was nice to re-create them. Back then I mixed much faster with vinyl than I do these days, so it was hard work to smash out 43 vinyls in 120 minutes! I hope you'll really enjoy, I definitely had a great time with this trip down memory lane.

It had been a while since I dived through the Wormhole, and I felt it was about time to do another Neurofunk classics vinyl set. Combining the very start and inception of it around 1998/1999 as well as the 2004~2006 re-interpretation of it as Noisia and Phace burst onto the scene. The difference between Neurofunk and Techstep, Techy and Technoid wasn't very clear in the early days. I basically selected the vinyls that to me had a lot of funk in them (in my opinion 'Funktion' for example is Neurofunk in retrospect rather than Techstep). It's actually this funk that I miss in modern day Neurofunk, so I hope this retrospective will make you enjoy and move as it did for me!

After the Neurofunk show from four weeks ago, I figured it would be good to focus on what I always considered 'Technoid' DnB back in the day. The lines are blurry between Neurofunk, Technoid, and Techstep. For me, Technoid is less funk, more two-step beats, nasty melodic stabs and riffs, and more techno-like percussion. Surely some of the tracks in this mix could be considered Techstep as well, especially the Usual Suspect ones. It seems that a few years later (this was the view in 2001~2003 I'd say), the term 'Technoid' was more applied to the heavier techno-influenced stuff like the OffKey label and Proket/Prode tunes, for example. For me however, it will always be what this mix is about, with the heavy influence from Kemal & Rob Data, Stakka & Skynet, early BSE, Sinthetix, some C4C, etc! I really enjoyed this show, and I hope you have too.

Back around 2011 after hearing Cowboy Town and being really into it the C4C guys asked me if I've like to remix something from their back catalogue and I said I'd love trying something on Paranormal (if you don't know the original go check it because its ace - http://cause4concern.bandcamp.com/track/paranormal )

Both C4C and myself were never 100% on it, and then I think I had some other projects needed finishing so sadly I never went back in on it.

I just came across the WAV and still like it enough to share a little clip :)

Priv started his DJ career in 2007 in the legendary Potsataja DJ-school. For the first 3-4 years he played mostly hardstyle and hardcore music, but every now and then he tried to mix a little bit of drum and bass. Priv was also a member of Vicious Vendetta, which was formed back in 2011 in Potsataja DJ school with Romm. They focused mostly on drum and bass and dubstep music. In 2016 they decided to go their different ways. During the last 10 years Priv has played on events all over Estonia such as Grind, Tartu Massive, KPK and Extreme while sharing the stage with big names like Sub Focus, Matrix & Futurebond, Kanine, TC, Wilkinson, Macky Gee and many others. From his sets you might hear some beats starting from more chilled liquid funk to dancefloor, but most of his repertoir consists of faster and harder neurofunk tunes.
