The Decline of Black Men in College!

Mais um episódio que não conseguimos gravar ao vivo com vocês, mas isto esta com data para mudar. Semana que vem, se tudo der certo já voltamos a ordem normal das coisas.

Nesta edição falamos mais dos playoffs. Estamos chegando nas finais de conferencia da NBA e nas semis da NBB. Bauru e Minas passaram com 3 a 0, dando pouca chance para SPFC e Vasco fazerem pelo menos um jogo nas séries. Enquanto isso, o Corinthians vem dificultando muito a vida do Flamengo, fazendo jogos parelhos e vencendo uma no rio. Já o Pinheiros conseguiu o mesmo contra o Franca, ganhando o segundo jogo por um ponto e trazendo a série de volta para São Paulo.

Na NBA a principal notícia foi a contusão do Jayson Tatum do Celtics. Isso dificultou muito a vida do Celtics, que ainda assim, conseguiu ganhar um jogo sem seu principal jogador. Mas tem de se pensar como será a vida do Boston na próxima temporada, sendo que o Tatum só deve voltar depois do All Star Game, provavelmente. Enquanto isso, o Pacers passeou contra o Cavs e chega tranquilo a mais uma decisão.

No Oeste, o Timberwolves não deu chance para um Golden State sem Curry, o principal jogador da franquia. Venceu por 4 a 1 e carimbou o passaporte para o final da conferência. Enquanto isso, o Nuggets forçou o jogo sete contra o OKC, melhor time da temporada regular. Será que Jokic consegue tirar mais um coelho da cartola e levar o time para a final?

Neste edição contamos muito com a participação de vocês no ao vivo. Afinal, apesar do Paulista e a W estarem rolando e LBF estar na final, não tem muito mais rolando.

No Brasil falamos dos times se preparando para a nova temporada e precisamos falar do União Corinthians. A janela foi muito boa e o time vem bem mais forte depois de ter feito uma ótima temporada anterior. A LDB também se prepara para voltar no mês que vem. 

Enquanto isso, a seleção brasileira jogou um jogo contra ela mesma na preparação para a Americup (Copa América) e já convocou os jogadores para competição. No sub-23, o Brasil está jogando o Globl Jam no Canadá no masculino e feminino e a equipe masculina já começou muito bem, ganhando do time da casa composto por jogadores da NCAA.

Na LBF a coisa ficou complicada. Com 2 jogos já realizados na melhor de cinco, o Sesi Araraquara abriu 2 a 0, vencendo cada jogo por apenas 1 ponto, com o segundo jogo indo para a prorrogação!!! E os dois jogos foram em São Luís. Agora os jogos vem para São Paulo, no Sesi Vila Leopoldina (falamos de porque não poderá ser em Araraquara). Se o Sesi Araraquara ganhar mais um jogo, será o campeão da temporada.

Na WNBA falamos bastante da falta das grandes estrelas na temporada, todas contundidas. Com isso, a W vem enfrentando problemas de torcida e de audiência. Como vender a liga que cresceu tanto no ano passado? Quem mais sentiu isso parece ter sido o Chicago Sky, que sem a Angel Reese por quase toda a temporada, vai amargando uma penúltima colocação e sem chances de playoffs. Pelo menos a Kamilla vem jogando muito e colocando números impressionantes.

E falamos da NBA, claro. Além do final do nosso Over and Under, falando do lado Oeste, contamos também da venda do Portland, da venda o Celtics ter sido finalizada e respondemos as perguntas de vocês que estavam na live. Foi bem divertido, então solta o play e vem com a gente!

Half-Time captures the thoughts and feelings of a basketball team at the halftime, rather than any actual playing. It is more about reminiscences, hopes, frustrations, and the numerous other feelings that most likely flood players at intermission, when the game is not over yet.

It is in five short sections (there are five players on a team), with the “bouncing ball” note A (also in a rhythm of five) appearing in most of them. The phrasing in the first section makes uses of rhythms derived from famous Celtic player jersey numbers (33 [3+3] for Larry Bird, 34 [3+4] for Paul Pierce etc.). This is followed by a section featuring a “wedge” motive, then a slow middle section featuring a dialogue between a cantabile espressivo melody and sottovoce harmonics, followed by a fast rhythmic scherzando section, and a concluding driving groove with a short coda.

While embedding jersey numbers in the opening section was a conscious choice, the rest of the piece was mainly the result of an unconscious process. I had heard Andy Wen’s beautiful saxophone playing at a conference and we discovered our mutual love for basketball.
I marveled at the fact that, though from San Antonio, he was a devoted Celtics fan (I call Boston home). I wrote the piece for him and initially called it Sonatina, until it dawned on me that what I had written had to do really with the game’s half-time. It is a musical intermezzo, so it can be played as an independent piece, between other pieces, and can even be repeated in the course of the same recital program.

Composer Michele Caniato writes chamber, orchestral, vocal, piano, and jazz music. His works have been performed nationally and internationally, including in the USA, Canada, Italy, Finland, and on Italian National Radio.

He was the winner of the 2019 Orchestra Composition Contest at the 53rd Contemporary Music Festival at Indiana State University, a finalist in the BMI Foundation/Charlie Parker Composition Competition in New York, and semi-finalist for the American Prize, and has received Fulbright, Massachusetts Cultural Council, and Jasper Whiting Foundation grants, and residencies at Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts (WY), and Escape to Create (FL).

Michele received a doctoral degree in composition from Boston University where he studied with Lukas Foss, and trained also at the New England Conservatory and Berklee College of Music. He has been a longtime member of the faculty at Fitchburg State University. Caniato is an ASCAP member and his music is distributed by Subito Music.
