Nearly forty Dmitri Gurov has a successful career and a young family. but is bored and dissatisfied. Holidaying alone, he meets a mysterious young woman - 'the lady with the little dog'

My adaptation stays very close to the original Constance Garnett translation  —  which is divided into four sections. Changes are mostly for length and clarity.

In this section I have changed Gurov's infamous phrase ''an inferior race' to 'an inferior sex', as that is what is meant in context.

"البعض يندِّدون بالعالم، والبعضُ الآخر يستهجنُ الجماهير، وفحوي القول مديحُ الماضي وإلقاءُ اللوم علي الحاضر؛ إنهم يزعقون بانعدام القِيم وهلمّ جرّاً، ولكن هذا كله قد قيلَ منذ عشرين أو ثلاثين سنة؛ فهذه صياغاتٌ بالية خدمتْ عصرها، وكلُّ من يردّدُها الآن رثٌّ أيضاً وفاقدٌ نضارته. إذ مع ذبولِ أوراق السنة الفائتة يذوي أيضاً أولئك الذين عاشوا خلالها. فكرتُ، نحن المستهلَكين، غير المتنوّرين، أصحاب الكلام العادي، النمطيون في طموحاتنا، قد عفا علينا الزمن؛ وفي حين أننا نحن المثقفين ننقّب وسط الأسمال المهترئة، ونتعاضُّ بحسب الأعراف الروسية القديمة، تضطرمُ حولنا حياةٌ لا نعرفها ولا نلتفتُ إليها. ستأخذ أحداثٌ جسيمةٌ بتلابيبنا ونحن غافلون، مثل جنياتٍ نائمات، وسوف ترون أن سيدوروف التاجر ومعلمَ المدرسة في يليتز اللذين يعرفان ويريان أكثر منا، سيُقصياننا إلي المؤخّرة لأنهما سينجزان ما لا نقوي علي إنجازه كلّنا مجتمعين. وفكرتُ لو تسنّي لنا الآن نَيلُ الحرية السياسية التي نسهب في الحديث عنها، بينما نحن متكالبون علي تبادلِ العضّ، فلن نعرف ماذا سنفعل بها، سنهدرها في كيل الاتهامات لبعضنا البعض علي صفحات الجرائد بإطلاقِ نعوتِ المخبرين والجشِعين، وسوف نفزع المجتمع بالسفاهة التي تكشف أنْ لا رجال بيننا ولا علم ولا أدب، ولا أي شيء! أيّ شيء! وترويعُ المجتمع علي النحو الذي نقومُ به، ولن ننقطعَ عن القيام به، يعني حرمانه من الشجاعة؛ ويعني ببساطة أن نجاهر بافتقادنا إلي أيّ حسٍّ اجتماعي أو سياسي. وفكرتُ أيضاً، سينقلب مآلنا إلي شمطاوات وعجائز يتوعّدون قبل أن ينبلجَ فجرُ حياة جديدة، وفي خضمّ كراهيتنا لذلك الفجر سنقفُ في مقدمةِ من يُجهِزون عليه."

Gurov goes to Anna's hotel room - and famously eats a slice of melon while she pours her heart out. Later that night the watch the sun rise in a beautiful coastal village.  A holiday affair?
