hey do you remember that one summer where you had a really bad cold AND it was a saturday so like that sucked, right? but yr aunt called yr mom and you ended up hanging out with yr cousin and he came over with the brand new paper mario cart that had just hit blockbuster and oh boy you guys just stayed up into the night eating sweet tarts by the handful and plugging away at those levels but then hm weird you feel weird, right? dunno what's happening but it.. oh yeah you took some cough syrup, but it was just a little too much maybe? and now yr stomach is hurting a little bit and the 2d characters on yr screen start to waver a lil bit and like.. ok yeah nevermind yr feeling better. it all wanes so you eat a few more sweet tarts and then.. no, the weird feeling is back... are they looking right at you? you touch the joystick, poke it a little to the left just to see if they would react. and they did react. they turned their lil 2d bodies just the slightest and.. looked you right in the eyes. and they stared. and they did blink, but too quickly to really tell. and then.. are they- are they smiling? yes. they are. maybe it's a trick, some shadows creeping into yr peripherals. you turn to yr cousin to ask if he sees it too, but he's not there. in fact, no one is. the house, previously humming with life, is empty. you don't know, but you do. 

you turn back to the screen, the CRT flickering heavily now, warped lines bleeding into stark contrasts, and the characters are closer. still.. smiling? you aren't sure.

but i can assure you, they were smiling. and they still are. 

do you remember? it's ok if you don't. i remember. and they do too.
