“They’ve sent over the list of new arrivals,” said Plate, scrolling through his phone.
“Nice! I’ll pick up the package after lunch.”

Needle stretched and paced around the living room before heading back to the bedroom — her workspace of choice. Big windows filled the room with light, and with her favourite mug by her side, it was all peace and quiet. She put on her headphones and joined a Zoom call. The day’s tasks proceeded as usual: a quick check-in with the team, familiar faces, back and forth questions and answers.

Meanwhile, Plate was unpacking a box of records. He was examining the covers, inspecting the content, and setting up the lighting for a new batch of photos.

“Look at this beauty!”
“I’m in a meeting, later,” came the reply from behind the half-closed door.

There was still a long road ahead to their dream life. But the air was already charged with quiet excitement, and the wind of changes was just around the corner.

On the streets of Berlin, it’s easy to spot people who know their electronic music. You’ll see curious partygoers as well as picky listeners whose appreciation isn’t easy to win. Tonight, both crowds are heading to the presentation of Daniel Gardner’s record. A cult album that was revived thanks to a fresh concept and a remaster. By evening, Jonny Knüppel was packed. Among the guests — a flamboyant duo that couldn’t go unnoticed. Some swayed to rhythms that felt like old friends, while others — luckier ones, perhaps — were discovering an entire world for the first time. As they approached the booth, Plate leaned in with a warm smile:

— Daniel, we’re huge fans! And that track in particular, Wasting Time, the way the instruments speak to each other, it is just incredible.
— Thanks, guys. It means a lot to know you’re getting the meaning behind it.

The morning was crisp and clear. The Hague was only just beginning to stir, but someone had already found their rhythm. Plate had a list of addresses saved in his notes — potential spots for their future vinyl store. Real plans, of course, called for a bit of luck and beautiful views: linden trees whispering along the canals, a sea breeze full of encouragement, distant seagull calls, and the soft clang of trams.

First stop: Denneweg — a street that felt like a page from a design magazine, nothing but showrooms, galleries, antiques, and wine. A realtor in a light shirt was already waiting by the door of a former barbershop: a clean rectangular space with high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows. Great foot traffic. A storefront that seemed to come alive in front of the observer’s eyes. Plate could already hear the music playing, see visitors flipping through records in search of something unique.

Next came Papestraat — louder, and somehow closer to heart. A three-story building next to the city’s best coffee spot. Until recently, it had housed a small shop of handmade goods. It was the kind of place you could work, drink tea, and build a little corner lined with shelves and turntables in. The classic Dutch staircase alone was enough to inspire joy.

The day hadn’t gone in vain. Plate came home with photos of two key locations. One looked like an album cover, the other like a B-side you want to play over and over again. Needle smiled at what she saw. Somewhere between those two streets, their next chapter was quietly going underway.

PREMIERE: Frivolous - Sérénade Des Excentriques [CHCH04]

Finding a place was only half the job. The real challenges started right after the inspection.

For the first week, Needle and Plate lived in dust and debris: tearing out old counters, hauling bags of rubble, prying off mirrors and redundant wiring. They undid everything that didn’t allow the place to breathe freely. The ceiling was odd — riddled with holes for fixtures, as if every previous owner had tried to leave a mark. The walls didn’t help either — crooked, like traces of someone’s doubts.

There was plenty of work, but it was exciting. The store wasn’t meant to be just a stash of records, but a coherent, tactile space with character. A black staircase, wood, glass, acoustic panels, track lighting — everything was falling into place. The interior, initially foreign and quiet, was starting to take shape.

One evening, they stepped inside with no tools — just to look. It was quiet, like in a studio right before the recording.

“Do you feel it?”
“Yeah,” Plate nodded. “Just a little more to go. Then we’ll see what the city has to say.”

CC25 | Santucci – A Garden Built From Light

As befits a brand-new shop, Chippy Chasers has greeted guests with a sign “Open.” Saturday loves gestures like that and helps attract all kinds of people — attentive and not so much. Inside, it still smells of wood and drying paint. From early morning, records are being shelved and spun, and barcodes are being attached to them. Meanwhile, in the café across the street, people have already started swaying to the music.

The door chime doesn’t stay idle either — it rings more and more often. Ah, these diggers: so many preferences and approaches! Some German tourists sifted through the vinyl until they decided to ask for advice. Plate suggested a pair of house records with a light jazz tint. The beep of the scanner announces the first sale. A local spent a long time comparing the coloured and black editions, but the classic black won. The neighbours dropped by to learn the name of the place and note the quality of the sound. The record store has begun to come alive.

The day flew by, uneven but lively. By the evening, the boxes had thinned noticeably, receipts piled up on the counter, and a pleasant hum still hung in the air. Needle turned the volume down and bumped knuckles in relief.

“You know, at some point I started to get scared.”
“I understand. I had my worries, too, but this has turned out to be a solid start. More to come!”
“Can’t wait for new visitors!”

Chippy Chasers In-Store Session with Kooscha

Chippy Chasers is an illustrated electronic label and record store from The Hague, promoting a wide range of house sounds. Founded in 2023, the project blends music, storytelling, and visual identity into one continuous experience.

The stories unfold in the present — through the lives of Needle and Plate, two friends who simply can’t imagine life without music. Female selectivity and male determination take them across Europe’s nightclubs, record shops, and creative spaces — all in search of that perfect moment the dance genre has to offer.

Spacelunch (short. spclnch) is a Dutch electronic music label with an emphasis on the dub sound founded in Minsk in 2019 by Thomas Carmody (@thomascarmody). The key ethical principles are an individual approach and a careful selection which allows you to get the best possible from the communication with artists.

The concept of releases is dedicated to a fantastic multimedia universe. The space adventures of Spacelunch and Cat unfold in episodes of an interactive musical comic. Each of them has an original script, and they are connected by a consistent storyline.
