The guys came straight from an early lunch to welcome the pod’s first ever lawyer – David Hunt – as their special guest. David specialises in the interface between companies and governments, so the conversation covered a wide range of topics, covering all parts of the globe. The US, Europe, and China inevitably featured strongly as the implications of recent developments on global trade were also explored, before they concluded with an analysis of Nvidia’s attempts to get into telecoms.

Just the lads this week so they get to be nice and self-indulgent over subject matter. There’s no getting past the trade war declared by the US on the rest of the world, which affects all industries, so Iain and Scott spend a good chunk of time exploring the concept of tariffs and macroeconomics in general before pondering how telecoms will be affected. They eventually move on to examine Huawei’s full-year 2024 numbers before concluding with a look at the pros and cons of virtual RAN.

Remember the boy by the bins, feeding crumbs,

One swooped down, chip in beak, proud like a lord —

Now stranded at sea on vinegar breads.

“They just couldn’t share,” I said with a grin,
“That's why teamwork’s where the magic begins.”
You said, “One chip left,” and passed it my way —
Said, “Heroes share dinner. Villains take the tray.”

Seasalt stars and takeaway skies,
Wrapped in paper where memory fries.
Every chip a wish, every squawk a song,
We’re still here, even if the bags are gone.

You said, “Life’s a menu, and some pick wine,”
But we’ve got chips, and that suits me fine.
Who needs steak or dishes with foam,
When salt and a stoop make a palace feel home?

I watched your eyes chase a plane,
Said, “You think the seagulls dream just the same?”
You said, “They dream of chips — or freedom, maybe,”
Then fed one your flake. I said, “You’re brave, baby.”

It nicked it fast, near took my hand!
You said, “That’s the risk of feedin’ the land.”
But we laughed like we’d written the night,
Paper grease maps in takeaway light.

Told you this world don’t owe us flair,
But it gives you one star for every stare.
And if you look right — not fancy, not far —
You’ll see your face glowing under chip shop stars.

So I’ll save my last chip just in case,
For the you that taught joy in every taste.
I’ll be a gull, a thief, a queen, a knight —
And every flavour will still taste like night.

Or just wish for chips they never had?

Classically trained ballet dancer and multi-media performance Artist turned musician, J. Julian began experimenting with eccentric songwriting and manipulating electronic midi instruments in 2012. 
Eight years and an array of underground releases later ‘This Aint Smooth’ will be J. Julian’s debut single as an Independent Music Artist. 

Previously, J. Julian released two separate self-produced mixtapes (S.A.D.i & AUGUST4) where he experimented with a variety of personas and textures of soundscapes. Julian has performed these works in New York, Los Angeles, Rome and in his hometown Houston, Texas.

Pulling from the success of his international career in the Classical Theater Arts, J. Julian produced ‘This Aint Smooth’ as the foundation to tell a story of an experience in 2020. The title and lyrical message states a simple perspective that could be obvious about todays general climate (things aint smooth). Meanwhile the groovy baseline, snappy percussion and addictive rhythmic melody bring people together on an energy of vibrating dance waves. 

J. Julian’s vocal performance references an appreciation for the falsetto often seen in the disco hits of Earth Wind & Fire, The Bee Gees and Prince. The merge of these vibes with EDM elements bring a language of yesterday up to present day future wave. ‘This Aint Smooth’ has always been an underlying phrase within oppressed communities who still remain resilient in celebrating cultural pride. With all that is going on today, J. Julian wants everyone to dance through the hard times and stay uplifted.
