Suzanne joined Novelis in 2021, having previously spearheaded corporate sustainability strategies for delivery firm UPS, logistics giant Brambles and retailers Kroger and Petsmart.

She is currently responsible for the delivery of Novelis 3x30 – an ambitious integrated sustainability and business growth strategy covering process decarbonisation, the circular economy and first-mover investments in new technologies.

She shares her views on moving sustainability into the strategic functions of business, and her learnings on remaining resilient and cutting through the noise.

Did you know that disposable nappies account for approximately 400,000 tonnes of waste each year, representing 2-3% of household waste? Period products don't fare much better with one study indicating 200,000 tonnes of waste annually and then there's also adult incontinence products - we’re looking at 3 billion waste products annually for that. These are staggering numbers and ones we just aren't aware of. 

In this episode we speak to Elze Porte and Ayse Allison who are working to reduce waste with absorbent hygiene products - that's things like nappies, period products and adult incontinence products. Hear how they're working with manufacturers, users and waste management systems to make sure we’re not adding to the landfill.

Currently a third of all food produced is lost or wasted - around 14% between harvest and retail, and another 17% at household, food service and retail levels. This means that the resources used to produce it - water, land, energy resources, and labour – go wasted. Food loss and waste also account for 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. According to FAO estimates, the food that is lost and wasted could feed 1.26 billion hungry people every year. In a world with finite resources yet a rapidly growing population, enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of agriculture, and making the best use of the resources produced, can generate a triple-win for food security, environment, and the economy. Applying a circular economy approach can link these goals together. In One World, Zero Waste? we hear from Shane Ward, Professor of Biosystems Engineering, University College Dublin.

This move isn’t just business; it’s a vital leap toward a circular economy where batteries get a second life ♻️ instead of becoming hazardous landfill fodder.

But there’s more—U.S. Congress is actively pushing legislation to set federal safety standards for lithium-ion batteries, especially those used in micromobility devices like e-scooters and e-bikes 🛴🚲. As these technologies zoom into our daily lives, ensuring safety is absolutely essential.

This whole journey reminds me of the early days of AI—full of awe and possibilities but sometimes overlooking safety and sustainability. The lesson? Innovation must always go hand in hand with responsibility. 🤝

Here’s a bonus tip for you: if you have used lithium-ion batteries lying around, don’t toss them in your regular trash or recycling bin 🚮. Instead, find local community events or drop-off points for proper recycling. This small action helps prevent hazards and recovers valuable materials like lithium and cobalt for new batteries, making a big impact for our planet. 🌱🔄

So, here’s a question to ponder: how can we, as individuals and innovators, balance the explosive growth of battery-powered tech with the urgent need for sustainability? It’s a challenge that truly powers the future. 🔋🌟
