Organist Thomas Joyce is the Director of Music at Trinity Episcopal Church in Santa Barbara. He combines his passion for the keyboard (piano, organ and harpsichord) with conducting the Trinity Choir, and also enjoys composing choral music for church services. Thomas frequently collaborates with local musicians and ensembles as a keyboard accompanist and soloist. As a teacher, he has guided private students in voice, piano, organ, and music theory, and has served as an adjunct faculty member at Santa Barbara City College and Westmont College. Originally from Cambridge, England, Thomas has spent most of his life living in the United States. A lifelong student, his foundation in sacred music began at Washington National Cathedral, where he sang as a boy chorister and took his first organ lessons. Since his early musical training in Washington, D.C., he has served many churches and cathedrals throughout the United States as a church musician. Thomas earned his degrees in music from Interlochen Arts Academy (HSD), Oberlin Conservatory of Music (BM), Yale University Institute of Sacred Music (MM), and University of Washington School of Music (DMA).


The Organ of Trinity Episcopal Church Santa Barbara California
Trinity’s organ leads and encourages the joyful singing we have built together in this unique place of worship. The organ consists of fifty-four ranks of approximately 3,000 pipes arranged in six divisions. The pipes range in size from the largest, about eighteen feet in length to the smallest, about the size of a pencil. Some of the pipework is in the chancel, above the entrance to the church, and over the baptistry.
The organ was built in 1965 by Abbott & Sieker of Los Angeles. The builder incorporated some pipework from the original 1905 historic organ built by the Murray Harris Organ Company of Los Angeles. The Conkey Family memorial provided three new stops – Larigot, Sesquialtera, and Liturgical Trumpet en-chamade – added by the builder in 1989. The Melville Sahyun and Valde Family 1995 memorial gift of the Schulmerich Carillon rings daily from Trinity’s tower.
The Margaret Straight Memorial Organ Console, consisting of four keyboards and one pedal board, was designed by David A. Gell and installed in May 2006 by the Wicks Organ Company of Highland, Illinois. The multi-memory, state-of-the-art capabilities of the console enrich the tonal color and enhance the support of Trinity’s Music Ministry.
