As part of the Constable Ambisonic project I want to understand how we perceive the landscape, and what did Constable and his contemporaries bring to our understanding of the natural world, and who else has contributed to the language used and ideals we hold in regard to perception of landscape. Here I talk to artist and photographer Alan Hockett whilst sitting in a car after having been to the site of Constable's 'Weymouth Bay from the Downs above Osmington Mills'. We discuss a variety of topics including new towns, edge lands, the Leisure Class, our childhood playgrounds, and of course, Constable.

‘ I have an hour. Don’t waste it.

<•> Your outfit doesn't look particularly comfortable. Not exactly, swaggy.

‘ It's uniform; I take it you've never heard of that. What demons possessed you, in the height of May, to dress like a youngling bundling for a romp into the snow?

<•> Hey, at least I have fashion sense! But I’m here on business that I’d rather not be easily connected to my face.
<•> That is, if all goes as planned.
<•> Security officer? Really? I know you wouldn't choose this job, So-So…

‘ Hell are you getting at?

<•> It's okay. You know you can tell me anything. You know that, right? I wouldn't tell a soul.

‘ Oh, no. You already know.
‘ I know you know. You’ve been sticking your nose where it should never have been. Poking about down the dark path of a hellbound worm.
‘ What is this? Blackmail?

<•> Now, now, don't be so presumptuous!
<•> I’m offering a way out if you’ve got the guts to take it.

‘ Assembling dastardly plots for me. What reality is it you’ve decided you grasp? 

<•> Obviously you’re just here to steal something. And once the job’s done, you're of no use to them.
<•> But, dear Sora… We could take it all for ourselves! You'll get a far fairer share of the profit. The blueprints are already laid out. And you already have power, you have leverage.

‘ I hardly know the intricacies of their plans. You think they'd risk telling me? I’m the lungs of the operation, not the head. I don't know how you’d–

<•> Oh, but I do. I got some help from a friend.
<•> What a bunch of idiots. Pilcrow made quick work of them.

‘ Pilcrow… THE Pilcrow? But how–?

<•> Speaking of which! We've got another half hour, I’d like you to meet someone.

‘ You haven't seen me in years, and you're so confident I’ll go along with this deathly endeavor… You haven't matured a bit, Cash.

<•> What can I say? I know you well!

‘ You've made that abundantly evident.
‘ Freak.
‘ Lead the way then, you’ve already roped me into this scheme.
