What Shade of Green is Our Horizon? 

(a sound piece to accompany Lisa D. Watson’s Avant Gardener)

Lisa and I met while we were both artists-in-residence at The Studios of Key West in February 2022. My work has been increasingly engaged with our climate crisis and I quickly appreciated the way in which Lisa’s work seeks a positive approach to this monumental problem. So when she asked if I would create a sound piece for her upcoming show, I was very pleased.

Formative parts of my life, including my early childhood, were spent on the coast, experiencing and learning about the marine environment. My father’s work in submarine defense took my family to Key West and Bermuda, making my recent residency a moving return.  In college, I spent time doing benthic field research and I came very close to becoming a marine biologist. Over the course of my professional life in music, I have found it hard to see how pursuits in music and biology might connect – until recently. I now realize that the library of field recordings I have accumulated over many years of work in electroacoustic music have been waiting for me to see how they might become sound pieces. And having bookended the past seven years with transformative residencies on the Mediterranean and the Gulf of Mexico has inspired a new kind of work.  These pieces can be conceived of in narrative form, for the concert hall, but alternative forms – sound art - are now emerging from my process and these more properly occupy gallery spaces. 

In contrast to a piece of music, played in a concert hall to a seated audience, sound art acknowledges that the listener comes and goes at will. This shifts how artists can think about the possibility of narrative form – of “beginning, middle, end” through the journey of listening. What Shade of Green is Our Horizon? consists of a forty-two minute long piece that is continuously played as a loop in the gallery space. My intention is to color and heighten the experience of Lisa’s installation. However, if one did wish to sit, meditatively, from the beginning to the end of my piece, they would find that there is a large-scale narrative too and that alternative experience is also valid. 

What Shade of Green is Our Horizon? is a kind of aural land and seascape. The background throughout is a prayerful stretched chorale in G major for string quartet that progresses ever so slowly. Interacting with the harmony of this background one hears some recognizable environmental sounds, but also sounds at the threshold of recognition, abstract, yet somehow organic and capable of igniting a personal response.

Climate collapse is a symptom of our disconnection from Nature and how we have abandoned our original reciprocal relationship with Mother Earth. 

The Story is in Our Bones opens a portal to Indigenous cosmology and the collective knowledge of Earth-centered cultures that uplift  restoration and justice.  By weaving together ecological, mythical, political, and cultural understandings and her life experiences working alongside global leaders, systems-thinkers, climate justice activists, and Indigenous Peoples, Osprey Lake summons a new way of being and thinking in the Anthropocene that opens our capacity to transform the wake of colonialism, racism, patriarchy, capitalism, and ecocide into thriving Earth communities for all. Invoking the memory of our Earth lineages can help us usher and dream in the world we wish to see. Our is a time for both grieving and stepping forward to collectively participate in the Ancient Future rising. The Story is in Our Bones invites us to enact and embody a relational, Earth-conscious understanding of respect, reciprocity and regeneration. It is already here now, in the making.

I should have been found not guilty in this climate trial. Civil resistance is being crimininalised and climate denial fascists are beginning to take over our courts. I couldn't use any climate science in defence or even the right of necessity. Instead I had to rely on the conscience of my jurors. More than that, in doing so, they create a new way of seeing and being—a new civilisation. It depends on one word: "spirit." Something all the elites and their allies, the defeatists in our ranks, cannot see or will not see. It is our secret weapon, the source of endless power. With it, we can take down empires while realising it's just another day. What is this spirit? How does it work? The Spirit Of Revolution - Ep.1 The Intro

There are many ways of seeing—ways of sensing and feeling. It is possible, and a good thing, to transcend yourself, the world around you and even time. To look at all these things from the outside. To "look in," as you might say. This is the key to resilience - the ability to keep going and not burn out. To continue to be in service. This orientation will save the world—or what is left to save. And, excitingly, it is at the core of what could be called the next civilisation.

 The world will not be saved by a new morality—a wanting to be or do good—but by a new metaphysics, meaning a new way of seeing things and how they interact, how we see ourselves and the world. It means you act for the good, not to create good outcomes, but because it is good. You do it because it is a truthful and beautiful thing to do. After all, it creates what we might call a metaphysical harmony—a balance. Another way of putting this is to say you act in love because this is what consciousness is. You don't go out to "do good." You do good to come home because you are already a being that exists to do good. It is what you already are. You are not going anywhere.

Ep.2 A New Way Of Seeing

"U.(S.AD)" by Mr.FLEN is a hard-hitting critique of America's current socio-political landscape. This grime-influenced track takes listeners on a journey through economic struggles, political disillusionment, and the everyday reality of the working class. The title itself reflects the sadness of the state of the U.S. (United States), a nation that once stood tall, now battling deep fractures within.

725 — Trump win boosts far-right: Back civil resistance in US; Unite the left for socialist policies

This week (while the COP29 global climate talks are underway in Azerbaijan), Josh Shurley talks with Janet Weil of the Climate Crisis and Militarism Project (CCMP), a national project of Veterans For Peace.  The two discuss the often poorly understood linkages between global greenhouse gas emissions (which are fueling the climate disaster) and rampant US militarism. American aircraft, ships, and equipment consume massive amounts of fossil fuels in addition to the toxins released when ordinance is exploded and soil and water contaminated as a result of US-funded wars around the globe. The public must be mobilized to push the Pentagon to report and reduce its enormous greenhouse gas emissions, and to push Congress to redirect tax dollars to respond to the existential threat of climate change. The future of our children and grandchildren depend on it.

Music is not just an art form for me—it's a lifeline, a form of therapy that sees me through the highs and lows of life. Each track I create is a piece of my soul, translated into sound. It's in the depths of melodies and rhythms that I find solace, pouring my emotions and experiences into each note as a way to heal and understand myself better. My music is a diary of my journey, a reflection of the inner workings of my mind and heart. When you notice an influx of new tracks, it's a signal that I'm navigating through tougher times, seeking refuge and expression through my music. This direct channel from my innermost thoughts to your ears is what makes my music raw, real, and resonant. So, as you listen, know that you're not just experiencing a song, but a chapter of my life, a moment of catharsis, and a piece of my path to healing. My hope is that it may offer you the same comfort and escape it provides me.

It's official we are heading into the biggest shit-show in human history. The U.N says there is no ‘credible pathway’ to staying under 1.5C (October 2022). Revolution is now inevitable, a great danger and a great opportunity to create a new revitalised democracy, or allow fascism to drag us all into hell.

Far from it being the end it's just the beginning, there's everything to play for but only if we organise and resist as if our lives depend upon it, because they do.

Eric Chasalow is a composer known for both electro-acoustic music and music for traditional instruments.  Among the last generation to work at the original Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center, since 1990 he has directed BEAMS, the Brandeis Electro-Acoustic Music Studio. Eric’s music is programmed throughout the world and he holds awards from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters.  The Library of Congress established an Eric Chasalow Collection in 2009, and his music may be found on a number of record labels, including New World Records, and his own, Suspicious Motives Records.  A library edition of his complete works for solo instrument and electronics was released in 2015 for his 60th birthday (available through Tfront.com).

Eric is the Irving G. Fine Professor of Music and the Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Brandeis University.
