We introduced and are advancing a collaborative initiative: The Universal Clinical Trial (UCT) in Mental Healthcare. It was designed to involve frontline mental health professionals in systematic, ecological clinical research for the purpose of assessing health-relevant biomarker correlates at intake, during and after psychotherapy. UCT diagnostic and intervention efficacy protocols use a standardized intra-individual repeated-measures design, to cross-validate psychiatric diagnoses using biomarkers. Interventions are monitored with HRV Apps for response analytics and treatment efficacy determinations. An overview of pilot, biomarker-guided diagnostic and intervention findings from patients with a variety of mental disorders is presented. HRV-Respiratory Sinus Arrhythmia biofeedback (RSA) serves as a primary and adjunctive treatment modality.

Responding to therapeutic needs of refugees: Many refugees from war areas flee to Europe. Due to traumatic events they experience in their home countries and on perilous journeys, and finally due to adverse conditions in exile, a large proportion of refugees present with posttraumatic stress disorder and depression. However, the current theories and treatments of trauma-related disorders are not designed to respond to refugees’ presentations. Moreover, the current way the treatment is provided is not well suited to meet the needs of refugees. Experiences of refugees from war-torn countries help to challenge some core assumptions and prompt us to adapt the current thinking about psychopathology, therapy, and treatment delivery. 

The lecture is followed by a discussion hosted by Agnieszka Popiel, M.D., Ph.D. / Associate Professor, co-founder and co-head of SWPS University’s Clinic of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy. We focus on the following issue: If evidence-based practice (EBP) is defined as the integration of the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of patient characteristics, culture, and preferences (according to the American Psychological Association) - delivering treatment to refugees presents a challenge for a (quite idealistic) equilibrium of EBP. People who have suffered so much deserve the best available treatment. Our discussion focuses on questions that are emerging when clinicians equipped with evidence-based treatments face people fleeing wars.

82: In Conversation with Prof Phillippa Diedrichs - AM10 Keynote Speaker

Each May, the U.S. recognizes Mental Health Awareness Month, established 75 years ago to highlight the importance of this essential issue in Americans’ lives. It’s also a time to recognize the resilience of people who live with mental health conditions and honor all those who stand by them – a group that includes both family and friends, and the dedicated mental health care professionals providing services to improve their well-being. 

Psychologist Jason Schiffman is deeply committed to assisting others. The professor of psychological science heads a research team that has published over 200 scientific articles and acquired over $15 million in funding for their work on psychosis. He also trains and consults for clinics across the county on best practices for supporting people on the psychosis continuum. As the director of UCI’s Clinical Psychology Program, he helps guide cohorts of graduate students who are similarly compelled to provide mental health care for others. 

What is psychosis and what do we know about it? Why do mental health challenges like psychosis still have a pervasive stigma and how can our community come together to change that? How is UC Irvine playing its part in providing mental health services with its new Psychological Services Center, and how can community members access care? What are some simple steps we can all take to protect and improve our own well-being? Schiffman answers these questions and more in this episode of the UCI Podcast.

Roland A. Carlstedt, PhD, ABSP, is a licensed clinical psychologist and is board certified in sport psychology and biofeedback. His research focuses on integrative health psychology behavioral medicine, clinical sport psychology (athlete mental health), and peak performance. He is advancing two predictive clinical explanatory models in the context of clinical diagnostics, intervention response and compliance analytics and outcomes in psychotherapy and clinical trials.
