There about 850 iconic wooden covered bridges still standing in the USA, from the thousands built in the first place. The idea originated in Europe with the Chapel Bridge in Switzerland built in  then 14th century. They are mainly in Pennsylvania (200), New England, the Mid West (Ohio, Indiana, Oregon ). Theodore Burr patented the Burr Arch  Truss bridge inn 1817. The strong design was capable of longer spans than seen before, and these are  mainly the ones that still survive today. Various others came up with new designs for ‘roofing a bridge’. Today they are seen as an iconic and nostalgic part of American history with a strong sense of romance. The principal reason for the cover was to protect a wooden bridge from rain and snow and to extend its life from 15 years to 90. It also created a stronger structure when facing high winds and heavy loads. The cover also reassured livestock ( horses and cattle), making them feel more secure when crossing. They are now some of the most photographed sites in the USA. They’re were often called ‘kissing bridges’ and ‘tunnels of love ‘ ( how nice is that ).Some were thought o be haunted, but they were all a symbol of community sprit , with everyone joining in to build the structure. A National Society works hard to preserve them from the risk of fire, floods and heavy traffic. The bridges often represent ‘ transition, lost love and rural innocence’. The appear in films like. ‘The Bridges of Madison Country ( Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood) Funny farm ( a Chevvy chase comedy), Beetlejuice and Cider House Rules. They bridges symbolize a connecting of two sides, sheltered romance and intimacy, a lost period in time and mystery. Lots of babies have been born on the bridges and  they have been used to shelter travelers in times of storms,  They were also a common site for suicides,, for accidents and fires, crime and violence ( e.g. robberies, murder and bootlegging). Also used for social gatherings, speeches and town meetings !

My song ‘Covered Bridges’ was written to reflect this rich unique history and to try and reflect the bridges and what they have been used for, in all their glory. I would love to visit a few. I’m a big fan versus some of the concrete monstrosities we see nowadays. 

 The song starts, ‘Covered bridges, so much safer, for the horses. Eighteen o four, built by a man, called Theodore. The men join up, to construct river Bridges.’

Then I add a bit of context, ‘Parties and barbecues, and. secret rendezvous. The horses' hoofs. Hampshire, Vermont and Ohio. passing folks and cargo.’

Then I can’t resist a bit of nostalgia ‘Ends open, no snow settling. Locals can keep crossing. Now only a few hundred, dyeing fast, once trusted. So beautiful. Part of my  
past, a sad farewell’

The chorus probably says it all, ‘Covered bridges, so much safer, for the horses’ It's probably me getting carried away but wouldn’t it be nice to think that caring for the horses ( so they can't see the river and get scared ) was the principal  reason for building them !
Maybe I can still imagine, Wooden roofs. I can still hear. The horse's hoofs’ and keeping the bridges open, ‘Ends open, no snow settling. Locals can keep crossing.

Questa composizione musicale originale nasce come libera interpretazione e personale riflessione sonora sull’immaginario del film “Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo” (1966), diretto da Sergio Leone, con musiche originali di Ennio Morricone.
Pur richiamando l’estetica e il linguaggio musicale del western all’italiana, l’opera è interamente originale e non contiene citazioni dirette o rielaborazioni dei temi del film.

SULL’OPERA
La composizione, della durata di circa dieci minuti, è strutturata come una suite / sinfonia in più movimenti, ciascuno dei quali esplora atmosfere, tensioni e simboli tipici del western cinematografico:
1. Punto de vista.
2. Incontro con un vecchio amico.
3. Occhi d'angelo.
4. Gara.
5. I gladiatori entrano nell' arena.
6. Coda.
L’organico strumentale comprende gran parte degli strumenti tradizionalmente associati al genere western, reinterpretati in una forma musicale autonoma e contemporanea.

This original musical composition was born as a free interpretation and personal misical adaptation on the imagery of the film "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" (1966), directed by Sergio Leone, with original music by Ennio Morricone.
While recalling the aesthetics and musical language of the Italian Western, the work is entirely original and contains no direct quotations or reworkings of the film's themes.

ABOUT THE WORK
The composition, lasting approximately ten minutes, is structured as a suite/symphony in several movements, each of which explores the atmospheres, tensions, and symbols typical of the cinematic Western:
1. Vantage point.
2. Meeting with an Old Friend.
3. Angel Eyes.
4. Race.
5. The Gladiators Enter the Arena.
6. Coda.
The instrumental ensemble includes most of the instruments traditionally associated with the Western genre, reinterpreted in an autonomous and contemporary musical form.

De negende aflevering van het vijfde seizoen van Cinepraatjes, de podcast van Cinemaatjes. We staan allereerst even stil bij het overlijden van Robert Duvall en Tom Noonan. Blijkbaar hebben filmstudenten een korte spanningsboog en een verslaving aan de mobiele telefoon. De productie van 8K is gestopt en maar goed ook. Uiteraard is Marino er weer met een prachtig sonnet. William ging speciaal naar de bioscoop voor de podcast, maar zag een dag later een film die ‘m totaal omver blies, in de bioscoop zag hij de nieuwe Park Chan-Wook film ‘No Other Choice’ en bespreekt deze kort, want hij had geen andere keus om toch over de andere film te praten, die JP toevallig ook heeft gezien nl. de Wim Wenders film ‘Paris, Texas’ uit 1984. JP zag ook nog de nieuwe horrorfilm ‘Primate’ met een moordende chimpansee. We trokken de VHS-band van ‘The Prowler’ uit de kast, een slasher die we op YouTube al eens hebben besproken. In onze Special blikken we weer terug op een film die we al eens hebben besproken op de bank en kijken we of onze mening wellicht is veranderd, dit keer de klassieker ‘Dirty Harry’ uit 1971 en we benatwoorden ook weer vragen van luisteraars over o.a. films met fictieve bands of muzikanten, een film over het draaiend huis, films die leuker zijn om over te praten dan om te kijken, onze top 5 niet Engelstalige films en over onze naam “Cinemaatjes”. Veel luisterplezier!
