New Qena City by Parker Leftlover - A minimalist coldwave song.
The second single from Parker Leftlover’s upcoming album « Obligation of Joy » (out October 31st) ventures into darker and colder sonic territories - a feverish coldwave tune, paranoid and driven, with a distorted voice that feels like a whispered confession.

The lyrics of « New Qena City » were written while passing through the Egyptian city of the same name. The architecture of planned cities becomes a metaphor for identity crisis : alienation in moments of despair, a prayer chain made of disorientation.

The past couple of weeks have been emotionally rough for me, and it is always interesting to see if my emotional state influences the music I make.  And I definitely feel my struggles in the darkness and tension in both the music and the lyrics of this latest Interbay track, "Xpectations."  

The music is a rusty machine chugging along, doing the best it can to do the job it was built for--but it sounds like it could shatter into pieces at any moment.  The lyrics are some of the most personal that I believe I've crafted for any Interbay track ever...where I absolutely don't feel like I'm at my best and I'm trying to find the self-confidence to project a feeling of adequacy, the sliver of interest that might still be conjured in someone else towards me, the difficulty of marketing a flawed product...especially when that flawed product is me.  

...so, yeah.  A little dark and tense.  Not enough to save it for the upcoming Spooky Week, but certainly enough to make for a listenable and effective Interbay track.  

I always say that mmy latest Interbay track is one of my favorites I've ever made--and I definitely feel that way about this track.  I love the chuggy grind of this track, the combination of drum machines, synths, and guitars.  For as simple as the melody and arrangement is, there's actually a lot going on here, but I don't think it ever gets too busy.  Yeah, I think I did good with this one.  I hope you'll agree.

Experience

For this track, inspired by Depeche Mode (once again!), a lot of mixing work was done to "extract" a sound close to theirs (I don't know if I succeeded). Several layers of synths from Roland Cloud like the Juno 6, a Prophet 5 bass (emulation), arpegios from the Korg Wavestate, my keyboard of choice now. The emulated voice of "Dave" does the job, bringing to life a text that I wanted to be dark, but so topical.
